ipad 3g - data plan or regular plan?

    Hi there,

I've an iPad 3g on order and I've started to shop around for a data plan for it. I use data over 3g quite infrequently so rather than going with an actual data plan I was thinking going with a pay as yo go sim. They get you about 50M per day for a euro. If you go for a proper data play they are about 3 euro per day.

Is anyone else doing this or is there an actual block there? Apart from the physical size of the sim - will there be any problems?

would there be an issue of tethering if you just use a normal sim?

    well, I don't know...

But then again, wound they be bothered if I wasn't doing the prick?

I'll be using the 3g maybe 1-2 times per week - 4-5Mb tops. Feels a bit overkill to purchase a 500Mb bundle at €3 per day then...

Tesco offer a data plan that costs €6 for 30 days and 1gb. You can order a free sim on their website, I think you have to cut the regular sim to fit the micro sim slot on the ipad but for the price it's worth the hassle.

It's a payg as opposed to contract by the way. Theres a good thread here : http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=71195711

Tesco will supply you with a microSIM on request.

    It's 7€ a month (6,99) not 6.

If you get a 3Pay SIM you can buy a bundle of 500mb for 5€. Clearly not as good as the Tesco for value in this country, but OTOH you can roam with the 3SIM in Italy, the UK, Austria, Denmark and Sweden without penalty.

If he's using this in an iPad, tethering isn't an issue.

    Update on this.

I got my iPad anyway. With tesco you have to phone in in order to get data so for the time being I'm using a regular pay as you go meteor micro sim. I stuck the sim into the iPad straight and it wanted me to register for a more expensive data plan.
so I put the sim into a phone and made a phone call and then put the sim back into the iPad. Since that it has been working and I get to avail of the 80 ish cent per day data. I only get 50 M but that's plenty for what I am doing.
