Could one could argue that he has benefited from performance enhancing drugs? I don't know how much of a difference it would make, I'm just presenting the argument.

Maradona is ahead of him currently for me though. Maradona played his football in an era when kicking lumps out of players such as himself was the norm, it was part of the game and players went into games against him with the sole intention of hurting him badly (a leg breaking tackle whilst playing for Barcelona being the prime example). Despite this, he was able to perform as well as he did. Messi plays in an era where the game is almost non-contact and players get so much protection. If someone sneezes at him he'll get a free-kick. It certainly makes a difference for me.

Messi has only ever played for the best club side in recent times, whilst Maradona has dragged an unfancied club side to two of their only league titles on top of almost single-handedly winning the World Cup with a limited Argentina team scoring one of the best goals ever seen.

You're right, he could well go on to become the greatest ever player and he's young enough to do it. However, until he at least turns up at international level or preferably does the business at another club too then he's not as good as Maradona was IMO.

Cruyff's got to up there too and he was very unlucky not to win a World Cup with Holland in 1974.

No, one could not make this argument.

Fair enough, you're probably right. It would be interesting to see if players pumped up on growth hormone have any advantage though. I wonder if there's any testers willing to give it a go :pac:

Watch any game Messi plays. I guarantee there'll be at least 10 bad fouls on him. Football may be a softer game but players like Messi are still targeted in the same way. But, like all those of a similar ilk before him, the lad gets up and keeps going. And he does it in an era when simulation is expected, where diving/feigning injury is seen as a crucial part of the game.

It certainly makes a difference for me.

I think his growth hormone thing was due to a deficiency, rather than an advantage from a base start. If Ronaldo had had these growth hormones, I think he'd still be the same size as he is now no?

With Xavi and Iniesta behind him no wonder he is getting so many goals. How could he not? But look at him at the world cup then, didn't score a single goal.

If C.Ronaldo was at Barca he would have at least 70 goals.

I can see what you are saying, but trying to compare players from different generations is like comparing apples and oranges. Back in the old days you could argue that the average player was much of a physical specimen and had less of a skillset than the average player of today, so it would have been easier for a truly gifted player such as Cruyff or Pele to stand out.

It makes for good barstool conversation though!

On topic, Messi is awesome and we're lucky to be able to watch him play every week.

Well, I'd love to know where I posted that one. Maybe you'd care to show me?

I do however believe that he will go down as the greatest ever player.

If Ronaldo had been GH deficient and been treated for it like Messi he'd probably be smaller in height & muscle mass than he is now.

I'm growth hormone deficient & have been on replacement therapy since I was 11 [I'm 30 now & still taking it] I'm 5'3" which makes me the smallest in my extended family & I couldn't build muscle til I was well into my mid 20's. It didn't give me any advantage in sports!

When I see Messi on TV I think he's an unbelievable talent despite being on HGH, not because of it.

I think the video is actually a porr reflection on him.

He scores loads but in the video all you see is the finish or the tap in. Alot of his goals are one on ones and frankly a little samey!

I think the true genius in the man when it comes to runs, approach play, visions etc is not well represented in that vid!

PS: More long rangers please (the FK was a one-ff) and more headers (I only counted one)!

That's the reason I love Messi to be honest, if you saw him in the street you think you'd be able to kick the sh*t out of him. He looks like an average tiny tot. Then he gets on the field and he's magic. He plays football so simply too, he beats people with a good touch and a drop of the shoulders. He never does step overs, or cruyff turns, he just has such a good elementary control over the ball that he doesn't need to do them.

There was one game a few weeks ago against Madrid where he was pinned up against the touch line against with 4 defenders crowding around him, and somehow with his ability to keep the ball so close to his feet he just ghosted out between them. It was amazing, and when you watched the replay it looked like the easiest thing in the world. Whenever I watch him play I feel like I should be able to do the things he does, as they look so simple.

Cristiano Ronaldo is unbelievable because of his athleticism, he looks like if he wasn't a footballer he could easily cross over to rugby/ sprinting/ boxing or whatever, he is has the perfect athlete's body really. Messi natural body type would barely qualify him to be a professional bowling player ffs. And in spite of the stuff he had to go through, he is now 23, playing for Barca, potentially winning his 3rd CL and 3rd Balon D'or in the world. It's a fairytale.

I really do feel he'll go down as the undisputed greatest of all time if he can stay away from injury woes over the course of his career.

ENOUGH OF THE BARCA AND MESSI JIZZFEST, that was so 2008/2009 right?

One of the biggest reasons I believe he is somewhat resistant to injury is because Barça knowing what a special talent he was assigned him his own personal trainer since a young age who has focussed on building up his legs. I don’t know who here has seen Messi close-up but he has the biggest legs you are likely to see on a footballer. They are like tree trunks. I have stood within about 5 feet of him and it is just pure muscle and totally disproportionate to the rest of his body.

Sure look at that above. That would break most everyones ankle right there. Messi was back in 3 weeks after it. Testament to his strength.

Ouch. I think he was just lucky there tbh, your leg not breaking under another man's weight has more to do with that than strength.

I've a feeling if Busquets got a Utd player sent off (2 players = jizzfest) in the final you would say in this order.

    1) Sure Busquets didnt mean to get him sent off.

    2) Maybe he did touch Busquets after all.

    3) Sure diving is part of the game these days.

Yet if a Utd player accidentally injured a Barca player for a bit in a 50-50 ball (however unlikely that is to happen) you'd be jumping out of your seat shouting "RED CARD!!". Yet you'd be preaching about the morals of the game on here.

What has that got to do with the topic of this thread?

    Back on topic
Messi for me is still just a level or two of Ronaldo. The frightening thing is they both are getting better each season - STILL.
Ronaldo has added a work ethic (sort of) at Madrid that he never had before. He is also after getting a little less petulant too!
Messi's reactions have improved, there's a few goals there where he reacted at the last second to tap the ball in. A few seasons ago he would have missed that.

For me Messi is the best in the world by a bit of a margin.
Ronaldo is second, his pace, strength and general athleticism allow's him to create an score countless opportunities.
Third place is a close one, it's Xavi or Iniesta. Take your pick.
