I currently have a provisional licence and once i have the full licence i will be getting my own car. I was looking at a bora 1.9 sdi or a 99 astra 1.7.

    A) what is the insurance like on them and the cost of tax and nct

B)what are common problems with these cars

    C) any other suggestions preferbly diesel

The only way you'll get an idea of how much the insurance will cost is by ringing around to insurance companies. If you are under 25 this is the only way to do it. Online quotes are a joke.

Wouldn't touch the Bora with a barge pole. SDI = horrifically slow. Although that being said, it'd probably be the most reliable engine you could go for.

Don't know much about the astra, wouldn't be keen on it tbh.

What kind of mileage to you expect to be doing? If it's not much i'd go petrol.

You'll be paying a considerable premium for a diesel over a petrol. For such tiny mileage i'd go for a petrol.

Insurance costs are going to be the biggest deciding factor in your decision tbh. I'd get quotes on a few different cars first if i were you.

    Keep this in mind!

I'm 19 with a full licence looking at boras myself tdi tho from 99-02, sdi's are way to sluggish for me but a great engine have a sdi caddy never a bother on it
:) Don't know much about the astras lovely looking car all the same. I got a quote off quinn for just over 2300 euro then did a quote on a 2002 1.2 saxo exact same price as well not going to mention what aviva and axa quoted :( I think it really just depends on the age and unfortunatly the gender causes the high price too friend of mine, a girl, got insurance for 1200 first time out on a learners permit on a 00 1.2 corsa it pisses me off on how cheap girls can get it but ya just have to accept it.

Your probably like me and want a diesel but there all big engines except newer cars that are to dear to buy pug 206 1.4 hdi are the smallest affordable diesel I can think of but there not for me.

Put it this way no matter what car ya get ya will be rode for insurance no matter where ya go

Know what ya mean, starting out, the only company that would even quote me at 20 was quinn. Seems to be what they do best is looking after younger drivers.

2300 is still huge money though, but you've gotta start somewhere! Will get much better as you build up your no claims bonus!

Go petrol, you're not doing anywhere near enough milage to warrant a diesel

Also 1.7 / 1.9 @ 18 on a learner permit....bend over for insurance. Tax will be higher too

So when are the new rules coming in about equal rates for male and female?!

Is it cheaper for over 25s female on first provisional?

The older you get, the cheaper it gets generally
