It's a class below size wise. Have you looked at the Mitsubishi Grandis?

The question is more, do you need 7 seats or do you need 7 seats and some space for cargo.

The Touran will be fine if you need 7 seats and can live with 5 or 6 seats, when you have to carry cargo (like on holidays).

If you're looking at VW and want more space, you'd have to look at the VW Caravelle instead to get 7-9 seats and cargo space.

As for the Touran, the 1.9 TDI is preferable over the 2.0 TDI, as the 2.0 can be a problematic engine. Otherwise, they're fairly solid cars.

Marlow, the touran sounds like the job, I have 3 kids, the occasional niece or nephew and a dog :)
I like that it's not too long in length , the verso is very long.
I have loved driving it but time to let it go ( it's petrol, so costs a fortune )

Will try find one ow within price range

    Thanks again

Also look at the corolla verso 2.2
The 08 Luna models are very well specced, the 135hp engine is very well suited and the 6 speed box is very nice compared to other cars with the same engine.

Finding one is the tough part

Have to disagree there. I drive a Passat 2.0 TDI and the engine is near perfect. Much quiter than the 1,9 TDI and bags more torque. I can overtake in 6th gear without changing gears. Goof mpg. Never had any problems with the engine.

My comment did not relate to the drivability. It relates to the issues, when the engine goes pop. There's been a lot more issues with the 2.0 TDI then you've ever seen on the 1.9's. Also a '06/'07 would still be a fairly early 2.0 TDI, which I definatly would stay away from, while the 1.9's were around for along time an well sorted engines.

The 2.0's have had issues with injectors, oil pressure, turbo going pop, if the oil pressure ever drops etc. Stuff never or very rarely seen on 1.9's.

Take a look at the Ford S-Max too. Decent drive and plenty of room.

Bigger and dearer than a Touran though, OP thought the Avensis Verso was too long.

Wouldn't those cars share the same engine with the IS220d, meaning that they will suffer with head gasket failure and other things that go wrong in the IS220d engine?

Anyone know why it is only the 2.2 D-4D that gives problems? The 2.0 and 2.2 are both Toyota AD engines, so apart from the difference in cubic capacity, the engines should be pretty much the same, yet the 2.0 never gives trouble.

We've a touran. One thing to check is the ABS been fixed. Common failure on all VW's and VW ireland don't cover it like they do in UK. Its a about a 1K fix otherwise. Should have been a recall. All these MPV's seem to have one issue or another. So you just have to be aware of them. Not many Tourans around and I think you'd have better choice in the UK. It is usefully shorter than most others, even the passat slaoon is longer. Only drawback with 7 seats up the boot is tiny. The bigger MPV are better in that case. The Toruans are not a bit more spartan than the other MPV's too. Less to break though. Herself loves it.

Most don't MPV's don't have a spare wheel either. Which is a bit dumb.

    Boston,
What's the deal with the no spare wheel ??
What happens if you have a flat ??
    ( sorry, probably a stupid question )

Feck, thats a real turn off

The idea is that you hardly have flats. So its waste of weight and space to carry around a spare wheel all the time. Especially in the smaller MPV's were space is tight. The touran has a air compressor (handy) and can of foam, I think other MPV's are similar, S-Max etc. We're mostly in Dublin so its not that big an issue. One trip down the country we got a puncture, but the compressor was able to pump it up enough to get to a garage. Didn't use the foam, so they were able to fix the tyre. AFAIK foam might make a tyre unusable afterwards.

I don't really agree with TBH because if you are somewhere out of garage hours, and get a flat with a MPV full of kids. A quick tyre change is what you want. Not a can of foam and the cost of another tyre rather than repair. The 5 seater Touran, has a spare wheel kit. I've heard of 7 seater owners, getting this and carrying it on longer journeys, maybe in a roof box or similar. This no spare wheel is becoming common on other cars too, especially sports cars. So be aware of it.

Thanks for the information, may look into the kit as I kind of had my heart set on the Touran
My husband will kill me if I don't make up my mind soon lol

I hear ya, have spent the last two months at the same thing. In the end we got a 06 Galaxy. Due to the nature of the beast tis hard to find a 7 seater with low enough mileage and that is in good shape esp the interior.

BTW there is a 07 or 08 Touran in a garage down here in Waterford, had a look myself but I thought the boot was too small.

Thanks for the tip, will see if I can see it online :)

I think the 2.2 toyotas giving trouble are the 177hp models. Haven't heard much wrong with the 135 and 150 models.

FYI the verso has a spare wheel which is connected by a winch to the underside at the back. It's really easy to use, you just leave the wheel on the ground behind the car, hook the cable through the centre of the wheel and wind it up from inside the boot. Much easier than the system in the Avensis verso and infinitely better than having no wheel at all.

Also consider the zafira. The seating system is a bit antiquated now but they're cheap and plentiful. dunno if they have a spare wheel.

Still no decision made, viewing a Touran later today.
