    Hi,
What ration do you shoot in- 3:2 or 4:3?
I just ordered some prints and have had sections cut off, which is annoying.
I'm not sure if it's cos I shot in 4:3 or that I manually cropped the photos myself.

Anyway if you print photos then isn't the logic to shoot in 3:2 all the time?

    print ratio
    4x6 3:2
    5x7 7:5
    8x10 5:4
    8x12 3:2
    20x30 3:2

So I guess it makes sense to shoot in 3:2 then.
If I select this in my camera will the viewfinder dispaly that ratio (Pentax K-7)?

can you change the ratio in-camera?
surely the best thing to do is to shoot in native resolution, which is obviously fixed.

btw, that tutorial - stcstc, ya gotta fix the typos in it. there are at least half a dozen.

You might be able to do that with the pentax. You can with some Panasonics. You're still better off going with the full sensor size unless it's easier for you to frame with the other aspect sizes.

You cant do it with olympus cameras, at least up to E3 model - its native 4:3.

    yea typos, ha ha

everyone is right shoot at native res

then if you want 3:2 crop to suit

if you go to a pro lab they should be able to print at whatever ratio you want

although be aware printing at odd ratios means you have issues with things like frames etc that are ready made

Will 16x9 ever become an accepted standard - given the type of medium used to display back images?

i.e. TV, PC monitors, laptops, handhelds...

Or will it only ever become the preserve of compact user?

doesn't need to be an accepted standard to get a print made....

    I got a 17m x 2.4m print made.... granted it wasn't in the chemists..!!

Speaking of ratios, I'd love to get my hands on whoever decided that 8x10 was a standard frame/print size!

Though that said, OP, i feel your pain. I shot with an Olympus 4:3 and a Canon 2:3 at the same time for a while and it became a bit of a hassle cropping stuff for print or framing (though like anything else, you get used to it).

These days my preferred print size for a 2:3 ratio is 8x12.

Photobox offer print sizing in 6x4 and also 6x4.5. This is handy if you have a four thirds camera as it doesn't eat as much of your photo.

Aye, I know that. Just had a 60x30 canvas done!

Just wondering if or when 16x9 might become a standard as such that shops even start selling frames in that aspect, rather than the old 6x4, 5x7 etc...

    I agree totally...

what I don't get is how they still mange to shift so many...

which they must do if they still make them... granted when you used to get a portrait it would nearly always have been taken using a 4x5 back (in days of yore!!) but most people using thier own cameras now must either crop or just sit their 8x12 in behind an 8x10 mount....

    'tis a strange one....

although A4 size mounts pre-cut are starting to appear for fitting into premade frames as home printing start to really take off
