Supplementary allowance refusal

    Hi folks,

Brief history - OH was on Disability Benefit & following a medical, we were notified that he was to go on Invalidity Pension. I am

self employed. 2 kids. 1 of the kids has a medical condition that requires a special diet. We have been just about keeping our

heads above water for the last 2 years but now my income has dropped by over 40%. We filed our 2010 taxes in February (joint

assessment) & our weekly earnings come to 591.79 pw - my income continues to fall.

During a recent checkup for my daughter, it came up in conversation about how expensive her medical diet is & the hospital said it

one of the 4 diets that you can get help with if you are on social welfare. So they gave me the required documentation. Long story

short, swallowed my pride & went to see local CWO, who was pleasant & said she would look into it. Application was filled out by my

OH as he is the applicant. Sadly today I got a letter of refusal saying that we have means in excess of the appropriate SWA rate.

We have savings of 7,200 and a mortgage of 350 per month.

We applied in April for a GP visit card & we were succesful in that thank god ! (took only 3 weeks from submitting form to

receiving the cards) so can anyone tell me how they consider us ok for a GP visit card but not the diet supplement (I thought the

income limit was about the same ?) and secondly do I assume then because we were refused the diet allowance that there is no point

in applying for the Back To School allowance ?

    Many thanks
