Can't keep my eyes open!!

    Hey guys,
I'm really worried about my eyes. Basically I was at a party the other night and ended up only getting about two hours sleep. Also I was drunk and did something really stupid, I left my contacts in while I slept. I know I shouldn't do this, I just wasn't thinking. Anyway the next morning I was fine until about 3 o'clock, then suddenly I was literally struggling to keep my eyes open. I thought the tiredness from the night before had just hit me suddenly but because I had work I could not go to sleep straight away. This continued all day, my eyes were bloodshot and burning and it was genuinely painful just to keep them open. I had never experienced anything like that before. I left work early because the pain got so bad and went straight to bed, but I found that even with my eyes closed, it was still painful and took me a while to get to sleep.

Anyway, I woke up this morning after 11 hours sleep and still the same thing! I'm struggling to write this as my eyes literally keep closing. It does not feel like tiredness, it just feels like they are pulling themselves closed or something. Obviously I have not put in contacts or anything like that and I wore my glasses to work last night. I know you can't give medical advice or anything but I was wondering has anyone experienced anything like this before? I'm getting really scared as this does not feel normal at all.

Thanks for reading and for any help.

I obviously don't know what the problem is with your eyes, but I suffer from dry eyes and went through a period in which I also experienced the problem you are describing.
My eyes felt dry, irritated any itchy and I had to blink all the time because I could't keep my eyes open. I went to an optician to get it checked out, apparently some tear glands were blocked. I used eye drops recommened by my optician and put a cloth soaked in warm water (not too hot as that might hurt your eyes) on my closed eyes for 20 minutes each day. My eyes got better after a few days. I still think you should see an optician, but maybe your eyes are just too dry at the moment.

    Hi there,

I had something similar for about a month too and thought it was just dry eyes and got spray in a health food shop to spray on my eyelids and when this didn't work went to the chemist who gave me eyedrops which meant I could open my eyes but they felt really dry. Last week I went to see my G.P. and he said they were very inflamed and prescribed steroidal anti-inflammatory drops which really did the trick. Before that I'd been wearing sunglasses and a hat out all the time as any light would hurt and like you my eyes would literally just close of their own accord! I couldn't even drive cos I might start off ok but after a few minutes they'd close. Even watching T.V or using computer for a while was irritating. Thats just my story though. Obviously I can't say whats wrong with your eyes but maybe if you visit the doctor or optitian they could have a look and see if you need anything for them, I wish I'd gone sooner!
Anyway I hope that helps you

your really scared about this so you decide to ask random people on an internet forum instead of getting it checked out with your optician?

Thanks to everyone for your help. I haven't been able to drive or really watch TV either which is extremely frustrating! I really appreciate all the advice.

Don't worry, I did go to the optician and then to my GP. I was waiting for an appointment when I posted so I thought I would see if anyone else had been through something like this before so I might ease my worries. Thanks for your concern though.

Been having my eyes close on me for several months. By chance I ran out of my synthroid medication. After three days without the medication my eyes finally opened. If by chance you have hypothyroidism you may be taking to much medicine and if not maybe you have hyperthyroidism. Just my experience, hope it helps someone out there.

Have your doctor check your thyroid
