Was listening to Morning Ireland toady.
They were talking about Prime Time Investigates tonight on the Taxi industry in Ireland.

    Talked about double jobbing etc.
Also about the state of some taxis.
They were able to rent a few that were un- roadworthy but had resent NCTs.
So they bought two un-roadworthy cars, sent them for NCT - Failed!
Talked to a few "people" was told that cost to pass was €100.
Result, two cars passed a few days later !

Makes you wonder how many other cars have passed with a backhander?

Its not just taximen. Dealers are 100% at this aswell with cars they take on trade in that should fail and miraculously pass first time.

Lots of wide sweeping assumptions here.

This phenomenon isn't unique to the NCT, it happens with all agencies everywhere. Building needs a better BER cert, hand over a few quid. Need a new MOT on your car in the UK, give the tester a few quid. Need free Sky TV, ask an installer if he does nixers.

In other news, water is wet. Who'd have thunk it.

Agree, but while these abuses "might" be happening, it appears that here they have caught people red-handed with their hand in the cookie jar!
For what I heard they have independent assessments of the cars before and after the tests.
It will be interesting to see what NCTS response will be?
My bet is that they just blame a few bad apples, they work to the highest standards etc ....

Unless theres memo's sent down from the top saying that its ok to pass non roadworthy cars if the owner bungs you a few quid then it is a few guys workign there taking it on themselves to do it.

Well I dont know what else they could say , I always heard of this happening but never really knew if it was a myth will be interested to see what they actually did to trap these rogue testers.

I was informed that I could get a NCT on my car for e100 when I was having a pain in the arse getting it through, in the end I got it through properly, but now they want me to do it every year they can **** off TBH.

The NCT is a joke, so what if you can get it for e100 extra, its a money making racket, an extra e100 that saves you their pedantic bull**** is a good investment.

Cars over 10 years and Taxis should only pay e25 per year for NCT. That way its a fair system and not ripping you off, if charging e25 isnt cost effective, then they should do different tests on them.
Moving the Goal posts is bollix, a 10 year old car is a 2001 at this stage, how is that on the same par as a 25 year old Opel Kadett? Typical Irish, one rule for some, another for the rest.

Also why the **** would anybody get in these heaps of **** carinas and the likes that are unroadworthy, and clearly so? If nobody got in them, there would be no issue. Its easy to spot a roadworthy carina and a ball of **** (before I offend the resident carina owner club :p )

Although In fairness to the Tester I dealt with in Ballymun, He wouldnt even take
the tip I was giving him for getting the car through, as he went way beyond what he had to to pass the car. He told me it would look like it was a bribe.

I've seen a mates car go through with a busted catalytic converter and pass. Backhander time. His mechanic knew the tester, though the figure in his case was 200 quid. Got talking to his mechanic and he said it was quite a regular thing "in the trade", but for things like emissions not brake failures and the like. As PaintDoctor said though it's to be expected to happen to some degree. I just got the distinct impression from this guy that it was at a higher level that you might think.

It'll be interesting to watch and see the assessments alright and if it's done for tabloid style shock value or not. It'll be interesting to see what they pass them on. Slight increase in CO not exactly a crime against humanity. Brake failure or huge imbalance then yea roast them.

It is another tax IMHO. And an incentive to the car industry. The nonsense I have heard and overheard by a couple of NCT testers trying to convince me and others that their car was only fit for scrap and would cost 1000's to sort.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Could have got a cheap cat that would last a few years for similiar cash. Depends on the car though.

I disagree. I see it as a cheap and fairly exhaustive safety check....when done fully and properly ;)

100 for the mechanic, 100 for the tester:D
