    Hello guys,
Has anyone taken flying lessons in galway before? I have seen this club that is self funded. Does anyone know the membership cost?

It says €80 per lesson but you have to be a member. It does not say how much a member ship is?

Also anyone know if it is good?

Hi there, I did it and also got "jollys" with them, my first flight with them was in EI-GWY, I also flew in EI-BIB and EI-MCF, I have not been flying with them for ages but I know one or two of the lads, sound bunch of people and very professional and an Intro Flight is ALWAYS fun!

They are based out at Carnmore and from what I recall you can just ring them to ask for an intro flight. I dont think you need to be a member, I was not when I went up with them for my intro flight. Either way enjoy, its great fun.

I got a voucher at Xmas for a one-hour lesson with the Galway flying club and I still haven't gotten to use it! It's not as simple as just booking the lesson unfortunately. I've had to formally apply for temporary membership and then I had to call into them for a short informal chat. Your membership application has to go through an approval process, even if it's just a one hour flying lesson you want.

I'm now waiting to hear back from them and then I should be able to arrange a time slot for my lesson.

It is a club, the instructors are not paid, its all voluntary. I believe the initial membership fee for full membership is quite steep - around 900-1000, and then about €250 per anum after that.

Yes it's expensive to join. Plus there are only a few Instructors and they are often only available at weekends. I heard from someone recently who was flying there at one stage that there were 22 students and only 2 or 3 Instructors all unpaid. So they are only available when they have the time. That's all fair enough, it's a flying club in the strictest sense of the word not a flying school. It's all about the members.

Which all leads to the conclusion that there's a gap in the market at Galway. Which I'm sure will be filled eventually;)

as far as im still aware it will not cost you more than €900 for the year... was thinking of joining last year but may next year... as it is, it IS a members club and theory behind it is members help other members to fly, given the time they can spare. Great idea but try to find out who does the most lessons and casually befriend them!

Reading that the cynic in me asks do they put up barriers to someone wanting to use a voucher ( bearing in mind an unused voucher is ' free ' money ) ?
Its an awful lot of crap to go through just to take a single introductory lesson

I'm sure it's an insurance issue.

It's a legal issue too, as a flying club they cannot sell joyrides for example. So it must be an official 'flying lesson' and you must be a member. The pilot must be an Instructor.

Hence the complications. I'm sure they would like to make it easier to get people flying but that's the way it is.

Even flying club members in Galway have trouble getting bookings for their flying lessons of late. Like I said in an earlier post there's a gap in the market there.

On local radio this morning they were advertising flying lessons at Galway Airport and getting a flying lesson voucher as a Christmas present, there was also a comptition for a chance to fly with them.

Given the horror stories I've seen on here about folk having all sorts of difficulties using vouchers with various schools / clubs I wouldn't be in any hurry to rush out and buy one.
