Em lookin to trade in my walther .22 and want a .17 for the longer distance shots on bunny wabbits and charlie. The problem is people are talking about .17 hmr .17 hornet .17magnums and .17 centre fires are some of these the same and if there not whats there differences, and what one would suit me best for longer bunny shootin and charlie. And last but not least whats the difference in price on these bullets and i love brnos do they do .17

    Cheers for any info

if you're just gonna be shooting rabbits and the odd charlie then the 17hmr would be fine.
if you're gonna be shooting charlie a good bit maybe you should think about a 22 hornet, that would probably be just a straight transfer no new licence fee

FYI .17 HMR is .17 magnum, Hornady Rimfire Magnum :)

Cheap ammo, flatter than a .22 mag, good little all rounder

    Go for it :D

So hmr is hornet magnum that solves that and whats difference between centre fire and hmr and only shooting charlie when see the f***er knocking round any makes of rifle you could recommend

Ive never heard of a .17 hornet, to my knowledge the .17 magnum is the .17hmr which is getting very popular, it is basically a .22magnum bullet necked down to fit a smaller balistic tipped .17 calibre bullet! This is different from the centrefire .17rem! It apparently provides flatter shooting at longer ranges than a .22! Come in a few CZ models http://www.shoot.ie/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_25&products_id=155 Ammo is a fair bit more expensive at around €16 + per box of 50!

    Here ya go ;)

OP you think you need a .17 HMR. Not the be all and end all though ;) Your .22lr in the right hands is a very good choice for bunnies although it is a little underpowered for foxes over approx 80 yards

Ok so .17 hmr is the one then good flat shot for bunnys and charlie and bullets are 16 euro or that a box thats not too bad when should be able to get more head shot rabbits to sell at 1.50 a go thats covered one last thing what other good makes are there what moderator and scope would be a good combo keeping in mind i want good long rabbit kills and total budget of round 1200

Made the switch from.22lr to .17hmr for the same reason as you and never regreted it. i went for a secndhand marlin 917vs with a sak moddy and a swift 8-24x50 whole lot cost me less than a grand. heres a picture of mine

alot of people under estimate the power of the little 17g bullet, I used to shoot nothing but .22 hornet for foxes but the .223 has taken over from the hornet and the price of hornet bullets has shot through the roof ( no pun intended) as long as you know what way the bullet preforms in wind etc. you will have no problem dropping a fox out to 200 yards as I have done on many occasions . All it takes is becoming familiar with the round. as for rabbits - its so accurate I can get headshots out to about 120 yds , Im sure I could shoot alot further but I havent had a chance to test it out on a rabbit any further.

Not quite. "Hornet" and "Hornady" aren't the same thing.

    HMR is a rimfire - like a .22LR. Centrefire is like, say, a .308, 9mm or 12 gauge.

    Get a CZ.

tommy boy thats a nice setup and rabbit assasin sounds just like the shooting i want ive only shot rabbits to 60 yards or that with .22

Interesting you never mentioned Hornet as centerfire

Centerfire means just that, the firing pin hits the centre of the round (percussion cap/primer and that ignites teh propellant and sends bullet down range.

Rimfire has the primer in the outer rim of the casing bottom end, generally low Velocity small calibre. .17mach,.17hmr,.22lr,.22wmr are all rim fire

I believe the OP is looking fro a .17HMR. Fine for bunnies head shot, but not ideal for Charlie as it is relatively soft in comparison to harder hitting Small Calibre centrefires like .204 or .223(my Favourite Foxer)

I have Experience of the now almost Obsolete .17Rem. It was a cracker in it's day.

Now anyone serious about foxing use .223 or .204 and all the other Calibres are going out of fashion as the Centrefire Calibres .2 and upwards are better all rounders

If you want a good Fox Rifle, make sure you Budget the same for scope (or more)

    No

I'm same as you left Eye Dominant

But there are more options for stocks for Remington and others to shoot a Left hander

I had a special stock made for me by Edi Graef (PSE Composites) and it is Fan-Tas-Tic
Lefty rifles are generally the sh*t plain jane Models in a range

But a right rife and get your stock to suit, so happy days

    OP..
If your thinking of going for a CZ be sure to get an American style stock rather than the Monte Carlo style.....

The diff is that the american is designed for a scoped rifle and the monte carlo is designed for iron sights....
