Hi all, I will be doing an accounting internship this summer with a Big 4 firm. I just have a few questions:

    1. In terms of a training contract after, do Big 4 offer any contracts after the internship that bypass the Milkround or do yoy have to reapply as normal?

    2. Main advantages/benefits. Would love to hear of anyone's experiences and any advice you may have to offer!

    1. If you get on well you can be offered a contract at the end of your internship.

    2. Advantages:
    - Getting your foot in the door and getting an offer which allows you to avoid the milkround.
    - Gain experience to use when applying for other firms.
    - To work out if you actually like the work & make an informed decision on if you really want to spend the next 3.5 years of your life in that firm (or any of the Big 4).
    - Earn a bit of money

    Disadvantages:
    - Losing a summer of your college life

Really appreciate the reply. Getting an offer prior to milkround would be unreal, going to motivate me to work really hard.

    Anyone else have any experiences?

Foxtrol speaks sense, I did it a few years ago and got a pre-milk round offer from it which was great as I only had to focus on exams in my final year. You will get a good impresion of what work is like when/if you join as a graduate, althoguh the summer interns do tend to get an easier time as you wouln't be around for busy season. I'd deffinitly recomend doing it.

Thanks very much for the reply.

Sounds like a great experience! Were most of interns offered a position pre-milk round or only a select few as a matter of interest?

Most, but by no means all were offered a job.

I done one 2 years ago. Its a fantastic experience and a vital element to you cv in these sort of times. The likelihood is you will get offered a contract once you finish your internship but even if you dont like that particular firm the fact you have got an internship with a BIG 4 firm in a competitive environment like this says a lot. You will get contracts handy enough with any other firm.

Best advice is just get involved as much as possible. Expect to be doing a lot of redundant photocopying jobs but just take it on the chin and do it! If you're eager to do things and do it right you will get some nice jobs across your weeks.

The majority of advantages and disadvantages have been outlined! Its also a chance to meet some students from around the country at an early stage (doing the same internship/work experience) of your working life. Good for contacts!

True, it would definitely help anyone to differentiate themselves from others.

Also, is there generally a good social scene among interns? Like are nights out generally the norm etc.?

Ye definitely. They generally organise a dinner and drinks to start. And then a night a week is generally the norm for heading out with other interns. Even though there may be a small number of summer interns, there will be a lot of people there on work placement the same as age as you.

That's exactly what I was hoping for, a good social scene would be great. Looking forward to it!
