I understand that you have to be finished for three months before you can claim benefits, otherwise college students would simply sign on each summer.

Apparently, you may be entitled to make a claim, without having to pass the three month gap, if it is shown that you are in need of social housing.

But the OP is a graduate so can sign on now
OP, you need to go to your college administration department and get a letter confirming you are finishing your course of study

JSA: You don't have enough contributions so you need to do a means test and an interview and possibly the inspector will call to your place. Expect weeks and months of delays.

JSB: You have enough contributions. Were you working during college, like a barman or waitressing or did you have any job? The staff will tell you instantly if you qualify or not. If you do, it's extremely straightforward

I think this is one for the welfare forum. You'll get better answers in there than in here.

I'm guessing that you wont qualify for Benefit.(JSB)
    JSA requirements here http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/unemployed_people/jobseekers_allowance.html

You will need a letter from your college stating the finishing date of your course.

You get Jsa based on your age - it's the same as dole

€100 a week for under 24s and €188 a week for everyone over 24. JSA is also means tested if you are living at home so if your parents earn over a certain amount you won't qualify AFAIK.

    Moved to State Benefits.

The three months is for school leavers not graduates. also students cannot sign on during the summer as they are in full time education and registered for a full time course. hence they need a letter from the college confirming they have completed a full time course in order to begin the process. Contributions will be taken into account too.

Threads merged into one. OP - please do not create multiple threads on the same topic.

I have a similar issue, I've finished my course but I may be doing a masters. How will this affect my claim?

I worked full time for 2 years before I began college so I think I should have enough contributions for the JSA but I am still living at home and am under 25

    Not quite accurate.

The rates for Jobseekers Allowance are:

    - 100 Euro per week for 18-21s
    - 144 for 22-24 year olds
    - 188 for 25 and over.

These rates do not apply if you already had a claim in before they changed the rates, or if you have a dependent child, or if you are moving from Jobseekers Benefit to Jobseekers Allowance.

If you live with your parents, their income is taken into account. It will start to affect your claim if your parents earn more than 600 Euro net a week (after they have deducted mortgage/rent costs and some other deductions). See here for the exact calculation method http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/means_test_for_social_welfare_payments/how_parents_income_can_affect_jobseekers_allowance.html

The figure if you are only living with one parent is 470 Euro. Any amount above this is assessed at 34% so for every 100 Euro that they earn over this, you'll lose 34 Euro off your claim.

None of the above applies for Jobseekers Benefit, it is paid based on your 2009 earnings, if you were earning more than 300 Euro a week in 2009 you will get the full rate, if earning less there is a sliding scale.

There are also increases to the above rates if you are also claiming for a spouse/partner or dependent children.

No - don't wait 3 months - go to social welfare now

Probably - you have to sign up with fascinating and/or a local employment service

i cant believe you'd even be contemplating getting the dole. you should just take up and leave the first chance you get.

i dont understand. since you went to college and finished shouldnt you be looking for a job?

I'm a graduate. I live at home. My Dad only works, and I get e40 a week from the dole.

    NOT 100 or 200.

    Hope this helps.

@dienbienphu And while he is looking for a job, he is entitled to talk to Social Welfare and see what benefits he can claim in that timeframe.

    Ok so
I finish college in May! Im currently looking for jobs and have yet to hear back anything concrete yet. So as a back up im thinking the dole!

I currently live in rented accommodation with friends - they pay 460, I pay 400 for smallest room. I don't think I could afford to live there after I finish. (I have a student loan UK gov at the minute which covers it - along with some part time work)
I have worked in Dublin these past 2 years. And I want to stay here. - Would I even be entitled to claim benefits here? I have an Irish passport. I have not lived at home for since sept 2008
I have a job in a hotel but the work is very casual and I have not worked in weeks as it has not been busy - is this an issue?

Any advice on my situation would be great

Check your attitude. That's 100 euro being given to you off the backs of some hard working people. When I was in my first 2 years of college I was living off 89 euro a week from my part time job
