8mm Video Tape Repair

Hi guys, I'm wondering has anyone an idea of how to go about repairing old 8mm (digital8/hi8) tape?
I used to do a fair bit of casual recording about 8-10 years ago but then the handycam broke and it was too expensive for me to get it fixed.

So I've recently purchased a 2nd hand camera to transfer them to my computer, and maybe take it up again.
I've about 40 tapes that I was going to upload to my hard disk to preserve them. I've had a brief nostalgic glance through them, but some of them (approx 12) have snapped in their cassette :(:(:(. Is this repair a task I could learn how to do myself without springs and screws exploding from the cartridges, or is there certain equipment I'd need to do it?

Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated, as there are a good few memories in those tapes.
    Thanks in advance!
