COURSE CLOSURES - due to recession

In these difficult times, I know every club in Ireland is having to adapt to survive. Many clubs have gone into administration/receivership with the latest victim being the Lough Erne resort. I believe a number of clubs have closed completely including Harbour Point in Cork and Turvey GC just outside Dublin. Can you confirm any other closures?

Are you posting on behalf of a company, club or publication or are you simply a private individual?

I'm just generally interested as I'm sure 1000's of golfers around Ireland will be. If there is a problem with this question I can simply end thread

I don't think Harbour Point in Cork closed as a direct result of the recession, ie. players leaving, pricing etc, but maybe in a round-a-bout way ! I think they closed because they were selling the land for housing (which never took off). Shame, as it was a nice course.

Harbour Point closed as the owner was trying to get the land rezoned for commercial use, but a recreational piece of land needs to be idle for 5 years before it can be used for resedential or commercial use, it is only closed about 2 years at this stage.

Shame though, really enjoyed the course.

Know a greenskeeper there myself and he told me that they just didn't have the footfall, but that was down to them not putting money into the course, I think the Garda social club wanted to buy it but the committee rejected it, the guards would have left it open to the public too!

There are just too many golf courses for them all to survive. Think about it - about 420 golf clubs affiliated to the GUI, about 6% of the population registered as golfers a few years ago, 1 golf course for every 10,000 people in Ireland (far more than any other country, except Scotland). We reached saturation point a few years ago and are now in recession. Something had to give!
At an individual level, I feel sorry for ordinary members and golf course staff who are losing their clubs or jobs. The people I have no sympathy for are those responsible for incurring losses and debts year on year, hoping that things would eventually get better. But then, a lot of people in Ireland were on the band wagon.
The simple fact is that some courses have to close for the majority to survive.

If this is research for an article you are publishing I suggest you start by contacting the GUI who have done extensive research into the current fiscal state of golf in this country.

I'm not sure asking on an internet forum is any better than the lazy journalists at Sky and the like reporting twitter comments as news.

If I'm mistaken in your motives for asking that particular question as your first post on boards then I apologise.
