1.1 engine is the same as used in some puntos, cinquecentos and seicentos.
Generally it's very simple and reliable engine. It's non-interference engine, which means that even timing belt snaps, it doesn't ruin the whole engine. It's just needed to fit new timing belt and keep driving.

Generally it's pretty basic car, which will be quite reliable and cheap to run.
Don't expect to much thou as it comes to comfort of travelling.

I understand those engines are prone to head gasket failures - happened to 2 puntos I had which were otherwise very reliable.

    I don't think so.
Problems with head gaskets mostly appeared in fiat 1.2 8v. Not in 1.1 8v.

The punto didn't come with that 1.1.

My bad - your correct , the Puntos I had were 1.2 and both suffered Head Gasket failures.
