Sorry if this is a newbie question. But do you wear it on your front or back, or does it make a difference?

Wear on the front. This makes it easier for stewards to take down your number as you are coming over the finish line (can take it as you running in) this is in case the Chip fails or for some reason your result is missed it is a hard copy back up which they can refer to

Also, if the number pickup is on race day, Its much much easier to pin a race number to the front of your top than the back. You would need to be seriously double jointed to manage that.

On the front also means you can make use of RacePix to find pictures of yourself.

If it's on the back then the finish line marshals may try and remove you as they won't be able to tell if you've actually entered or not as your running towards them.

OR wear it on your back if you think you`re gonna run so hard that you`ll collapse at the finishline!!! :P

You'll probably be given two numbers, in which cae it's back for the cycle and front for the run. If only given one, then wear it on the front. This is something that should be explained in the race briefing. In any case you can ask at registration.
The simplest and fairly inexpensive solution would be to get a race belt and switch as necessary.

Cheers for the responces guys. Just got the one number, have it on the front.

Are those number belts easy to get/find?

For a running race you will only get one - put it on the front. Again race belts are not for runners, use the pins provided!

Sorry, you're right of course. Should have read the OP's post more carefully.

Is this an etiquette issue or some other reason?

Personally, I hate wearing numbers on the front, so in running races, I use a belt with the number on the back and switch it around when approaching the finish.

I remember reading somewhere (the complete runners handbook, maybe) that you shouldnt wear your race number on the front (where your belly meets your chest) as that area is really important for sweating and thus cooling you down on the run. That book recommended wearing a number belt too
