Taxi Driver and it's potential sequel

I saw Taxi Driver for about the tenth time last night - one of the cinemas here was showing it again for the film's 35th Anniversary.

In my opinion this film is an absolute masterpiece - everything about it is perfect, from the acting, to the directing and of course the script.

However, I've read that Scorsese and De Niro are planning a sequel. I think this would be a terrible idea - the original should be left alone without disrupting it with a sequel.

    What do you think?

    Could be alright actually.

Travis "Are you talking to me? Are you talking to ME?"

Youth "Yes pop. That's why we got skype, remember? So we could keep in touch after I left for college"

    - extract from Taxi Driver 2 : Assault on Oxford.

I think it would be a cinematic crime to make a sequel.

That article is 6 years old, I'm sure any potential sequel idea has been put on hold. That said there are plans for a remake, Lars Von Trier has challenged Scorscese to remake it as part of the his new Five Obstructions. Certainly to be one of the more interesting films if it does get made.

De Niro lost all credibility after "Analyse this". He's a bit of a joke these days.

Dunno how. He realised that he couldn't spend his whole life playing angry-young-men characters and decided to move in a different direction. He made a smart move. Whether you like the stuff or not the fact that he's made a success out of it just adds to his credibility imho.

In fairness, it wasn't a great film, but De Niro played his part pretty well.

As regards a sequel, it could be good, it might not be. I'm not half as familiar with Scorsese's catalogue as I should be, but he's got enough integrity that if he does try to make a sequel, it won't be half-assed. And if it doesn't come off well, it won't affect the quality of the original.

It's interesting to speculate what Travis would be like now though (not sure when the sequel would be set admittedly).
    Married? :pac:
    Steady job?
More deranged or possibly more mellow with age?
    Even more isolated/estranged from society?

    This gives me a laugh.

The only joke is your post.

Yes, lets discount all his early groundbreaking work because he made a second rate comedy.

He has a point though, Di Niro has made a lot more than one second rate comedy. Little Fockers? I mean seriously, did anybody come out of that with any credibility?

Taxi Driver is good and all but I was dissappointed with it when I finally saw it, I guess that's the downside of it being so iconic, my expectations were way too high. Although now that I'm a bit older and more cynical I might give it another look.
