Question i often ask myself when i see programs or news reports about any particular horrific crime.

Classic case of coming to conclusion of some people's crimes is to investigate their background, their upbringing, some have a lack of disciple in their life, others had a happy childhood but only troubled arise when they grew up.

I don't know if the punishment system rings home through some of these people, when you read accounts of being sentenced to be locked away for the rest of their life, their expressions are usually motionless,or maybe their feeling is i will appeal and win this.

Then looking at society view, newspapers would have pages full of grotesque crimes, books become best sellers,is there a society fascinated with evil that people do?

is it the case that we don't know what people do,some are just born evil?.

    I wouldn't say born evil.

Perhaps born with a greater capacity to be affected negatively be the circumstances of their life that may eventually lead them to carry out acts that other people would consider evil.

OP read We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Plenty of food for thought there.

I think people can be born with a higher propensity for cruelty and callousness than others, yes.

Locating the causes for such behaviour purely in the environment is limited and leads to 'ohh we're all to blame' hand wringing and ignores that people are born with differing traits.

Almost all children seem to be born with a sense of right and wrong.

In normal children they almost always lean towards what adults would consider moral behaviour, even displaying rudimentary understanding of justice.

The ones that are predisposed to 'evil' have less activity in identifiable (via MRI scan) areas of the brain associated with empathy.
