and perhaps a roll cage for the driver? Modern motorcycle helmets do not restrict peripheral vision. You'd cut fatalities by 60% in a year.

have you ever driven a car? ever worn a helmet?

i mean, not a formula 1 car,or a race car, one you drive everyday and get in and out of 20 times..not to mention that you wouldnt see your blind spot even if you turned your head, youd be knockin your helmet of the door frame for 1..

and wouldnt hear feck all either

Oh come on. Crashes that are bad enough to breach the car's protection will be bad enough to kill regardless of helmet wearing. It's not just head injuries that kill people you know.

Yes I wear a helmet every day. I still hear fine with the helmet on. And my peripheral vision isn't affected. If you helemt is knockin on the door frame then they could make cars a bit taller.

Yeah and thats why I said helmets would reduce fatalities by 60% not 100%. You say if something breaches the cars protection it will kill them regardless but this isn't true, every little helps, and a helmet could make all the difference. Also if people have not been wearing there seatbelt then they'll go flying out the window. I know you'll say if they weren't wearing the seatbelt they aren't going to be wearing a helmet, which may be true, but it will be much easier for police to spot someone not wearing a helmet than not wearing a seatbelt so they are more likely to wear the helmet in that case.

My bike ran out of juice a few years ago in the drive way, hopped into the van to get to get petrol, it was only when I got to the top of the road that I realised that I still had my helmet on. :p

    Would it really reduce deaths?

I think that the majority of deaths in car crashes are a result of the massive deccelerations involved i.e. car at 60mph hits wall and your brain/organs continue travelling at 60mph until they smash against your skull/ribcage.

What would a helmet do to help that?

I never go anywhere without me helmet, anyhooo, most car have a roll cage built into the body work, not like a rally car, but enough to stop the roof caving in on the driver should it roll. Also most modern cars will now cover you in airbags, think something like 4 in my car for the driver alone.

Maybe if the car was an Ariel Atom it would make sense but otherwise completely unnecessary

Yes, helmets save lives. Especially leather ones, like in this crash :D
