Hi all maybe Slidey can answer this.

A mate with a tipper truck was turning in a tight spot today and heard a bang at the rear of the truck. When he looked at the truck the chassis cracked at the rear just near the bogie.

Would his comprehensive insurance cover this. He rang them to notify them as he wont try and weld until they give his an answer...

No way would Insurance cover such a breakage as its down to normal wear and tear.

What make of truck and configuration?

It would be quite rare for a tipper to break a chassis. Hinos sometimes cracked the subframe between the bogies.

A crack isn't the end of the line for a truck. Properly welded and plated and it should be fine

Its a Hino 700 8x4. Its between the Bogies allrite. He dont think it can be plated there with all the chassis bolts.

Is it the main chassis that is broken or the subframe that carries the bogie?

A 700 can't be that old, has it much work done? Maybe get on to Harris, you never know, he might give out a new truck, he has plenty of them up there!

Its the Main Chassis. I will try and get a pic tomorrow. Its a 06 with 430k on it. The crack is half way down the chassis beam. I cant see how you could plate it with the pressure in that area.

He reackons insurance will cover it..

If insurance covers it what they will mostly likely do is give him a repossessed lorry and take his own. Thats what I heard they are at if your wagon with HP burns in middle of the night.

I'm away for a couple of days but will check for a pic if I get a chance before I am home.

True but trucks are gone very scarce of late. They are making big bucks again with all the exporting..

I can't see insurance covering this TBH...

A Chassis crack mid bogeys is very unusual?

Any heavys I've been involved with publish chassis repair patch details, usually involving 45 degree ended welded patches etc.

    Keep us posted.

If ins. won't cover it, drill the two ends of the cracks all the way through with a 5mm bit, grind out the crack into a deep V and fire in a good bead of weld, 4 or more passes. Grind it semi-flat and plate over the top with a narrow strip of hardox or similar, welded everywhere a rod can get-I've welded some chassis and lift trucks in areas under serious pressure and most have held up well. Some just won't, but they are a minority. Get a good welder to do it and use stick not mig, stick burns hotter and just seems to get a better grip-if you can get to the back, even if it involves major stripping out, do so. Or not, just my tuppence of what I would do. Low Hydrogen rods with a fast freeze would also help, as would a dc welder. Also, that cracks not too new either, judging by the oxidisation.

Crack seems to be next to rubber pad under body. Is there many of these pads or is this the next one to the hinge. This point may be taking a lot of the load.
You may be better off with a sub chassis after repair. Only thing is it will add to unladen weight and height, but may be necessary with our bad roads and going off road and laden in quarries.

Insurance wouldnt cover it for him. I agree on the sub chassis but the body would have to be changed then. There is a good few pads and incidentily enough the very last one was missing. All the rivets on top of the chassis were lose and some missing.

Hi Corkie, it is unlikely that the insurance will cover this, however I am a Forensic Engineer and I have come across this before, Has the body been adapted in any way?. If you would like any advice on it, contact me by reply.
