    Definitely Dublin and its 1977. Don't know what month though. Cartell sees it as a Lotus (but you knew that, I'm guessing)

    Edit: I'll guess July as the ...ZA sequence ended in August 1977

    Comes up as a '76 Spitfire? What's the problem with the actual car?

    Lads, could one of you reg specialists do up a guide in how to find out what month / county a registration is from? By all means start a new thread, and I will reference it in the forum charter!

    Yes i do understand that........ but the car is advertised as 76 and the logbook states it is also 76,when i questioned the seller about this he stated that the Reg was off a SDI Rover that he once had.

    Not too sure about what the vendor is at, but he is at least honest( in that respect)

    I think that there may be a misunderstanding between yourself and the seller. If the car is a Spitfire (as it appears to be in the ad) and its showing in both the logbook and Cartell as a Spitfire, then all would appear to be in order. The registration is definitely 1977 but it is possible although unlikely, given import duties at that time, that the car was privately imported into Ireland in 1977 when it was one year old. I don't see how its a ringer in this particular case.

    When i Asked Him how its a 77 reg on a 76 Car he told me that the previous owner had lost the paper work and he had reapplied with a book that he had from a Rover SDI,this was done in 2004 although he owned the car for the last 25yr.He also had 2 registration Docs for same Car the old buff logbook although a reissiue and the new type that is now being issued,when i started to ask more questions he got a bit Narked and said he would not speak with me anymore,i called the potential buyer to one side and told him to get his deposit back and forget about the Car as something was not right,yes he gave back the deposit and we left.

    Sounds very odd. A real mess if you ask me, why the multiple logbooks?!
    A new type buff book will be issued if you lose the docs, I don't get the rover SD1 bit though?

    Sounds like the Rover was scrapped and the reg was reissued to the Spitfire which may have been an import.
    I believe this was allowed in certain counties before 1987.

    Maybe it was but he had done this in 2004:confused:after telling me he owned the Car for the last 25yr or more,as i said above something not right and very,very odd.
    Would of liked to ask him a lot more Questions but he became a bit Hostile so kept me Mouth shut and left;)with the Deposit that was paid the Day before:).

    I tend to use this Wiki page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Ireland

    If you go about half way down, it gives a pretty good guide to each county. Its fine for larger counties such as Dublin or Cork but a bit of guesswork is involved for counties with a smaller population.

    Like this: these are a couple of Dublins many reg numbers, its easy to work out which year or month the car is registered.

    1 AZC to 999 YZC (Aug 1977 - Mar 1978);
    1 AZD to 999 YZD (Mar - Sep 1978);

    But somewhere like Sligo is a lot more difficult.

    Sligo CC: EI
    EI 1 to EI 9999 (Dec 1903 - Nov 1959).
    AEI 1 to ZEI 999 (Nov 1959 - Feb 1980).
    1 EI to 9999 EI (Feb 1980 - Apr 1986).
    1 AEI to 835 AEI (Apr - Dec 1986).

    So it can be a bit hit and miss. I know theres a more comprehensive guide somewhere but the above tends to do it for me.
