MGZT / Rover 75 Airbag Warning Light

    Hi Guys,

Just purchased a 04 MGZT CDTI from the UK. The airbag warning light comes on and off intermittingly. Is mostly on but somethimes it doesn't come on until your a few miles into a journey. It wasn't on when I was buying it but came on on trip home. Its booked in for NCT and I need to get it sorted. Is there a quick fix for these. When I rang the garage they said it was a common problem and probably a connector under the seat which prob came loose when I was adjusting the driver seat. Any advice before I get down on my knees to look. I wouldn't be very technically minded but would be capable of checking connections etc.

    Thanks

It is more than likely the connectors under the seat however you wont be able to see any problem with them.
Still you can have a look under there and give all the connections a good shake and push them to together etc. That usually turns off the light for a reasonable period. At least you dont need a diagnostic computer to switch the light off for this fault on the rover 75 - it goes off if all is good.
Remove key before going near anything. Ive only given wires a good shake on the 75. Im sure the advice would be to disconnect battery and get any residual charge out of the system if you were to go replacing connectors etc. Im sure someone will have further advice shortly.

I had this problem on the Rover 75 after years of moving the drivers seat backwards and forwards. The main Rover dealer replaced a sensor (had them in stock) and charged me €88 for it

Happened me once in my ZT, one of the buddies got in, he's 6 foot plus and moved the passenger seat back a good bit (he's one of these lads that reckons he's a huge bastad so the seat always has to go back). When I moved the seat back later that day the light went off.

Failing it being caught in the seat and the jiggle not sorting it new bit as Unkel mentioned is probably needed.

As yours is intermittent I would think the cables are stretched a bit by the seat.

    Cheers Guys,

I'll give them the once over under the seat and a bit of a jiggle as ye say if not a vist to the garage may be in order 88 quid wouldn't hurt that much.

Its a well known problem on the 75, its the blue connector under the drivers seat. Re-seat it and spray with lubricant. its not normally the sensor so no need to splash out 88 euros to fix it.

Know common problem on Rover 75/MG ZT.

2 connectors under seat Blue and Yellow, either can cause the light, also after years of people pushing and jiggling the connectors the wires can and do break, in which case a bit of inexpensive chocblock and cutting off the connectors will repair.

The Seat air bag connector is the yellow one ( I think! ) and is not color coded so shouldn't make any difference which way you connect the wires.
The Blue connector is to the SRS in the seatbelt and is color coded if you relace/repair this one keep the wires the same way round ( There is a small explosive charge in the seatbelt system designed to tighten the belts in a serious impact ) crossing the wires may/may not give a problem!
