Yes modern Macs are essentially branded PC`s with their own OS.

The term for non mac PCs running Mac OSx is a hackintosh. Google and you should find good tutorials, a little tweeking may be required.

If the reason you hate Windows is having to hunt for drivers, frequent crashes etc, you won't find life much easier running a Hackintosh. Maybe try Ubuntu?

the mac os is tailored specifically for apple hardware, so a hackintosh is a complete waste of time. Try ubuntu, as already mentioned.

a 'PC' is a personal computer - so basically all machines are 'PC`s with their own OS', be that linux, windows, mac, bsd etc.

Unfortunately you can't discuss this here.

Just to be clear - the only thing thats tailored is the license.
Everything else runs on x86 hardware made by whoever will make it at quality x for the cheapest.

    +1 for Ubuntu.
Check out Natty - its slick :D , definately find it more productive!

its tailored for the hardware apple uses, and not for the zillion variations you'll find on non apple machines.

Its built for standard x86 hardware.

The hardware that they use isn't in any way special and the majority of it (maybe all) isn't manufactured by Apple.

Macs are great but I wouldn't make a decision to buy one based on your point because I don't believe its true. I do believe they just excluded support for other hardware because they just can.

At the end of the day you still depend on that one company and they are great but I like things to be more open. :-)

It still is missing some drivers etc. for a bog standard PC box. In terms of licencing that really means that Apple are not going to licence to other manufacturers, I dont think they are going to go after anybody using OS X on PC hardware. OP, try it and see. It should work.

I bought a Dell Mini Inspiron 1011 off eBay with MacOS 10.6 already installed. It works perfectly.

I should add that it is fairly easy to install OSX on this model and, as I bought a family licence, it is not illegal to do this. It is merely in breach of Apple's licence terms (which point has never been tested in court).

Just finished installing on a Toshiba a500-17x, everything works except for the wifi, was very easy to install and is very very fast.
