They start the 10th August and I'm pretty sure they're 60euro,but you only pay 60 each for 4,after that they're free as in if you have more than 4 it's 240euro regardless

Don't forget you can (in most departments?) pass by compensation if you got at least 25% and did half decent in another exam.

Do you have to have an average of 45% or something in ALL of your other exams,or just do well in one other? and do you have to appeal for this,or do they just pass you?

They'll just pass you. Happened with my 35% last year (stupid politics!)

I think you just need all the exams together to average out to a pass including the pass by comp exam.

So if you get 40 in four exams, 25 in one and 55 in another I think you'll still pass :)

good. thanks for the replies. i got 60 in last semesters exam but took too many chances this exam preparing questions. none of them came up and our lecturer is clueless to ad to this mess. i attempted the question but im confident i failed.

You will probably pass on compensation with that mark as long as you didn't get below 25% in the second one ofc

Tbh I'm not sure about the 45% rule, not sure about any set guideline on compensation. I think it's got a lot to do with lecturer/department discretion or at least that's been my extensive experience with it xD

Assuming you're not in final year of course, because I don't think you're allowed pass by compensation then.

Well I'll be joining you in August anyway dienbienphu o/

Hi just wondering does anybody know , if you have to miss an exam and repeat it in august does this affect your ability to obtain an honour in that module ? Somebody said to me its capped at 40% ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭wonton

I've never heard of this except for things that should have handed in towards the end of year, such as a thesis and composition portfolios.

If it was just your average written exam I cant see that being the case , perhaps check the module desription page, If its particular to that module or subject theres a good chance it would be mentioned

ya thats normally the case. if they didnt use that provision, people could just have another go if they felt like it, which would be illogical, however if you have a valid excuse, like a death or an illness, then it wont apply.

    Surely one causes the other!

    isnt 45% an honour?

    I thought it was 50...
Even so capping at 40 will stop you getting 45!

    First Class Honours 70-100%
Second Class Honours Grade I 60-69%
Second Class Honours Grade II 50-59%
    Third Class Honours 45-49%
    Pass 40-44%

Maybe the third class honours is only for certain subjects? I thought it was 40-49 = Pass.

yes i know, but im asking which is it, not debating over whether or not getting 45% is possible either way.

cos im almost sure ive heard people getting more than 40 in the repeats, but not sure if they got 45 or over.

"If" you are able to(because it depends on the department, music for example doesnt allow any resubmissions of essays) i'm pretty sure you will have to sit the exam as well, you can't just put a better essay in to bring up your mark.

If the mark for the essay was near the same as the exam like the way it is for english 45% and 45% it would be a better chance of being able to do it again in august.

Never heard of any department allowing repetition of continuous assessment assignments.

even if you didn't submit the medical thing you would be able to sit them, if it was august then you would be fooked, I knew someone who was up all night in the hospital cos his girlfriend was having their baby and he had to go into his exam at 9 the next morning or he'd have to repeat the year.

I did the exams anyway so didn't have to repeat but I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to!

Hi if I pass a subject by compensation can I do it in second year?
Also if i have to repeat can /i still do the subject in second year?
If I'm repeating or pass by compensation in French does this mean that I can't go to France in third year?

Paging Michellenman. If she doesn't see your post, message her, she knows all about this from what I can remember her doing in past years.

Yeah it's capped at 40% unless you're in final year.

are you sure? on the examination office pdf it just says you can't get honours.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 2,168 Mod ✭✭✭✭L1m1tless

Capped at 40% unless you have medical note etc. In final year you can repeat up to 15 credits for a better grade which wont be capped at 40%

ye thats the one i've read, it wont open on my laptop right now for some reason but it im pretty sure it only mentions essays being capped and not being able to get honours for exams in august.

not saying people are wrong above, just doesnt seems to state it in the document and would think it would be an important thing to point out.

I'm assuming you haven't tried simply emailing the examinations office, or indeed the academic advisory office. If there's such an issue with the document (and I really don't believe there is) surely they'd be the best people to ask rather than an internet forum? Generally the people in the college offices get back pretty quickly and are extremely helpful.

I was just wondering if i missed something in the document or whether people found info from other places. I could only see the part that said honours aren't given.
