Commercial Tax

Hi - i am sorry for bringning this one up again and I have read the other threads but I'm very confused! My husband works as a site manager - in his previous job he was provided with a van etc. but was made redundant 18months ago. He has a new job (again site manager) but it is with a small company and he has to use his own vehicle.

For months he was using our car (with the back seats down) as a van for carrying all his files & tools etc but recently he bought an '02 pajero to use for work - we use our own car which he is insured on, at other times. He didnt want to buy a van as he had berlingo's for 10 years through his previous job and he had nothing but bother.

I'm panicking now that he's going to have trouble getting commercial tax (its up at the end of july). We're based in Laois, he has no vat number. Would the R111 form signed by the guards and a letter from his employer stating he needs the vehicle for work be enough?

He might use it the odd time when taking the dogs out but 95% of the time he uses the car when not working.

This topic seems to be a mine field - everyone seems to have different experiences.

Is the Pajero a commercial version? (ie with no side windows and rear seat)

He will have no problem getting commerical Insurance.(which allows s&d pleasure also)

Issue is with the taxing of it. If he uses for pleasure...like taking the dogs for a walk on the beach .... IF he only has commerical tax & gets stopped then he runs the risk of having it impounded until he pays private tax on it as well as the impound fine.
But as loads will tell you it depends when he's stopped(time), where he's stopped & the humor on the gaurd on that day.
Either don't bring the dogs & use it for work only or pay the private tax & use it for both work & pleasure...

hiya - my bad - im mixing the whole thing up - he has the commercial insurance (i've edited the post now) - that was no problem but its the tax thats up at the end of july - given that he is a paye worker will a letter from his employer suffice? i've no bother keeping it purely for his work and then using the car otherwise - thought we'd keep the car clean and use the jeep for taking the dogs out but if that illegal I won't risk it.

I have a friend whose bother is a guard so could get the R111 form completed ok but it seems that people are saying you need a vat reg?

if he gets a letter from his boss it should do as my cousin had same problem and his new boss gave him a letter and he was able to tax the van commercially

    hope this helps

he will get it alright but he may have to jump through hoops to do so.It sounds like a clear case of commercial use to me,.

Check with the tax office as each one looks for different things. When I taxed my van they wanted the commercial Insurance policy & for me to sign it was for commercial use only. But each office does vary. You should not have to have a vat number but they may look for somthing else instead. ie headed letter from emplyer. Best check with them as they will tell you exactly than any user here.

It depends on that council's rules as stated above. I got the form signed in the guards, and posted all into Monaghan council, came back a week later with a big list of requirements. Changed the address on the form and sent it into Louth. Disc arrived a few days later.
Letter from an employer on headed paper is one of the accepted proofs in Monaghan anyway.Best bet is just to ring the tax office in your county and ask them

    Hi

I have recently gone through this affair with Meath motor tax office and they wanted a signed rf111 form with a vat no on it plus my insurance certificate proving business use.

ok - so hubbie got renewal form in post (normal green one). filled it in, send it back with DOE (only documentation asked for on form).

it has come back with a list of requirements as long as his arm!! Form to be signed by gardai, proof of vat registration or letter from employer stating he needs van for work and a weight docket - even though it states on the weight of the vehicle - what a pile of hassle and bollox.

I have no idea even where to get it weighed and his employer is an empty head - he'll have to be asked about a million times before he gives him the letter - why is it such a total pain to get anything done in this country!!

Totally agree but you can thank the green party for tightening up the enforcment of this. And all the citizens that have spent years abusing the system by taxing vehicles that were never used commercially.....

ok - update - finally got the tax disc but this is what he had to provide:

    -RF111A signed by gardai
-letter from employer on headed paper stating he needed van for work along with emplyers Vat reg and hubbies employee number.
-weight docket from approved weighbridge ie Glanbia
    -The Reg book
-His insurance certificate proving commercial insurance
    -certificate of roadworthiness

    Phew!!

These depend on each motor tax office...
    -RF111A signed by gardai
-letter from employer on headed paper stating he needed van for work
along with emplyers Vat reg and hubbies employee number.
-weight docket from approved weighbridge ie Glanbia

    These are standard....
    - The Reg book
    - His insurance certificate proving commercial insurance
    - certificate of roadworthiness
    - Signed RF111A form

Sligo office are quite reasonable when you genuinely use the van for work only.

thats the thing - it is genuine and only uses it for work, hes insured on our family car and uses it all other times.

I understand they are cracking down and that it was abused for years but the hassle of getting the necessary paper work done and taking time of work to get it sorted has been a pain for him. The girls in the office were very nice though - she did say that it was becasue this was his first time and when he taxes it next year it wont be as much hassle.

As far as I know, Laois and Wicklow are the most pedantic on this issue.
