    Hi folks,

Haven't posted in this forum, but regularly pop in to have a browse at the watches. Monty Burnz posted this thread about a brilliant watch site.
One watch in particular really caught my eye, the Marathon SAR
    mmarathonf01.th.jpg

I would love to find out how much one of these would cost and how I would go about getting one. You folks are the watch experts here and maybe you know of somewhere to view or buy one (depending on price :) )

    Cheers

Yea they're a really nice diver style watch and with actual military history. The one in that link is one of the originals. The later have the (better IMHO) tritium tubes for illumination. There's even a mechanical chrono in the range that IMHO is underrated and under valued. Low numbers made. Much lower than similar from "bigger" names.

Here's a link for sales, http://www.broadarrow.net/sale.htm but the problem is they won't ship internationally. :( TBH I can't blame them as stuff tends to go missing too often from the US. Within Europe you're generally fine. Chances are customs would intercept it anyway. In the sales section of their forum http://www.mwrforum.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22 you do see the odd European sourced one show up. They're usually around the 500 euro mark, more or less depending on condition and if they're on the metal bracelet or not. Now if you have any mates going to the US for a while... :)

As far as I remember, Marathon SAR watches are made in Canada, I remember seeing some info on buying from their factory directly. I will see if I can find out where it was.

@Wibbs - That sure is a beautiful watch you posted. But the price! Way more than I would spend at the moment. And it's feckin' huge!!

I still think the original SAR is fantastic looking. Prefer it with the steel bracelet tho..
If I could get one of them for around the €500 mark then I would seriously consider it.

@corpo - Be interested in that link

    Cheers

This isn't the link I was talking about earlier, it's from cuntycomm itself, but supposedly you can order internationally. Email address at the bottom of the page.

    http://www.countycomm.com/international.htm

Second link might help too, better off mailing the site owner, he will help if he can, so Ive been told.

3rd link based in Amsterdam, probably your best bet at this stage.

Failing that you could try the company themselves.

All I can say is wow - this CSAR is very tempting!!!

Cheaper but almost as nice, TSAR

How likely is it for a watch to get caught by customs coming into the country?

Good luck. Customs have caught everything I've bought from abroad, I may just be unlucky though. CONUS means Continental United States I've never managed to get a seller who says this to ship outside the US. Well not from that forum anyway.

Just be aware Cmar the TSAR has a quartz movement not mechanical, in case you were looking for that. I'd agree with corpo3030, chances of customs not stopping it a pretty slim these days. Me personally I would aim to buy one within the EU.

I've had some luck getting through customs using EMS, then again it may have helped that it was mostly filled out in Japanese

Well the CSAR and TSAR I linked too are both sold. So they didn't hang around. I reckon it would be a fairly solid investment buying one. They seem to hold their value fairly well.

There are a couple of secondhand GSARs on the Military Watch Resource at the moment and one of the sellers seems to offer international postage. I have no connection with the seller and he may also be reluctant to sell off that particular forum.

Whats the customs rate going to be if I do buy one from outside Europe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,340 ✭✭✭Cmar-Ireland

Thanks Bedlam, so a watch is duty free, just VAT to pay @ 21% of total cost (watch + shipping).

Hmm, might be easier to buy from within the EU then. No worries about the duty.

I think it's down to the original SAR or the quartz TSAR. But I'm undecided.
I've never had a high end watch and never an automatic. I love the smooth sweep of the second hand on the SAR. The TSAR doesn't have that.
If I bought one, it would only be worn occasionally, is this a problem for an auto? Would it need to be stored in a winder?

Finally, is there anywhere in Ireland to view or try on a marathon watch?

That would be my take too TBH. Less hassle.

You can always handwind an automatic anyway. Well most I think. Open to correction there though

Not that I know of, unless one of the members has one.

I've had a J-SAR in my watch collection since last November. I like BIG watches. It is a far better timekeeper than any of my mechanical watches, and only my 1978 Seiko Diver's 150 is as good.

IF you like a big watch, it makes the regular G-SAR/T-SAR look a mite puny.

Chances are pretty high against ever seeing another one in RoI, as well - unless I'm making a visit. ;)

PS - PM me if you want pics.

Sorry - but for legal reasons - I work part-time as a forensic imagery analyst - I can't download images directly from my HD onto a site like photo-bucket.

I CAN send you email images, though, IF you PM me with your email address. You may then do with them as you wish.

    PS - I'm currently wearing my dad's 1952 806 Breitling Navitimer....

Funny enough I have seen one here, but he was a visiting French bloke so not local :) Big isn't in it. HUGE is the word. I certainly couldn't wear one, except on my leg. Hell I could climb into it and use it as a bathyscaphe. :D

At 47mm diameter and almost 19mm high it IS quite large, but then I'm old and half-blind as well as deef, so any help I can get, I'm grateful for. 'sides, it helps to balance me out and compensate for my busted-up ankle on the other side.

    tac, eh?
