I think if you sync with iTunes it will allow you access it. To remove it altogether as you don't have the passcode, just do a restore. This needs to be done on the main pc used with it

yeah just sync with the itunes it's locked to and it will unlock it

The restore is saying, downloading software, 2 hours left. Surely there is a quicker and easier way?!

    Thanks for help so far

Afraid not, it might speed up in a bit. My update did. They last update was nearly 700mb so will take a bit of time. Is your phone jail broken to make it sim free. If it is, the update will lock it up

Thanks, that's what I meant. Basically the update would lock it up if unofficially unlocked

Back it up on your Pc at home.

Restore it at work, if all of your messages and contacts are gone, restore from back up on the PC when you get home!

So because he forgot his iPhone passcode and trying to reset this security feature is not an easy task, he should go with an Android?

    Right....

I did this before. Put a new passcode in while in bed falling asleep one night and had forgotten it the next morning.

I feel your pain OP but a restore should sort it out!
