Left Ireland in January and want tax back

    Hi,
I left Ireland in January and got my last pay slip then along with P45 on 20th Jan.
I got a bonus paid in March for work done in previous year, i.e. not earned in 2011. A supplemental P45 accompanied it.

I understand that I have to submit a P50 along with the P45 and supplemental P45.
What do I stand to reclaim?
I paid a USC of over 500 quid which I thought was a bit high for just 20 days in 2011.
I also paid a fair bit of PRSI.
Will the P50 get me a refund on PRSI and USC too?

I have been working in another country since I left with no period of unemployment in between.

I'm not including any figures as it is too much to expect people to crunch numbers on my behalf. I'd just like to know roughly what I can get back.

I've requested P21 balancing statements for all previous years so only year 2011 is in doubt.

There will be no refund of PRSI as this is calculated on a week by week basis. You may apply for a USC refund at the end of the year as Revenue will then know your earnings for the year and will calculate how much you should have paid. USC will be charged on the bonus as it was paid in 2011, doesn't matter when it was earned. If your earnings before leaving for Jan and the bonus comes to less than €4,000 you will get the full amount back (if earnings were between 4K and 10K you should have paid 2% so you would get the balance back). If you paid paye you could possibly get some/all of this back too depending on your earnings.

I usually recalculate the taxes I paid before requesting a p21 balancing statement because Revenue can recover monies from you if you have underpaid taxes too.

thanks. there is no USC refund form yet available so I'll send a letter to Revenue requesting a refund of USC but they may not give it to me until end of year. No harm in asking anyhow.
I expect to get some money back. I certainly haven't underpaid tax so I've no fear of going to them and requesting a refund.

    Hi Eleganza,

As far as I know*, you'll be able to claim a refund of PRSI paid (depending on earnings), you need to fill out form PRSIREF1. I'm not too familiar with the changes in the most recent Finance Act as PRSI has changed somewhat, so maybe someone more knowledgeable could confirm.

    * Threshold for 2010 is €352p/w x 52 = €18,304. Then again, I've just sat and failed my personal tax final exam today so I could well be wrong on all of this! :o

Sorry, not really sure about the USC but I'd imagine there is a threshold for this also (for the income levy, it was slightly over 15k last year).

Thanks, I've sent letter and P50 asking for USC PRSI and PAYE back. I'll see how I get on with that and then follow up on if I get no satisfaction.
The first woman I got through to in Revenue Commissoners was a right irrational rude wagon.
