A COURT has issued an arrest warrant for a convicted rapist whose severed arm was found on Dollymount Strand earlier this year, and whom the Garda say may have been murdered.

James Nolan (46) had failed to show up on a previous date at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to explain why he was not complying with the requirements of his post-release supervision.

Judge Yvonne Murphy heard in March that Nolan had not been seen for some time by gardaí or the Probation Service. She put the matter back until yesterday so Nolan could be tracked down.

When Nolan, of Fairlawn Road, Finglas, again failed to appear, Judge Martin Nolan issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

A severed arm was found on Dollymount Strand in February. At the end of March, it emerged that gardaí had established that the limb, which was severed at the shoulder and the wrist, was Nolan’s.

His DNA had been kept on a database in the UK following an arrest in the jurisdiction in 2008.

While no other part of Nolan’s body has been found, officers believe he was abducted and murdered before his remains were dumped at sea.

They also believe the fact the hand from the severed arm was cut off may have been an attempt to thwart Garda efforts to identify the victim using fingerprint technology.

Nolan, who had convictions for rape and burglary, had been missing since he was released from Portlaoise Prison last November. He was jailed for three years in 2009 for burglary. In 1986 he was jailed for 14 years when he was convicted of rape and false imprisonment.

Nolan’s brother, Robert Nolan, who was convicted and jailed for the same crime as his brother in 1986, said in March he believed his brother had been murdered.

He appealed then to anyone with information about the disappearance to come forward and assist gardaí with their investigation.

So they believe the man was murdered, after finding his arm at Dollymount. An then they go an issue an arrest warrent for his arrest, cause he hasn't kept to his bail conditions. WHAT A FUKED UP SYSTEM!

I guess they have to issue the warrant since it hasn't been confirmed that he is dead.

How is the system fuked up? A convicted rapist has gone missing and the authorities need to find him.

    Not really.

They don't know for sure that he is dead so they have to follow the proper channels and issue a warrant for his arrest.

Technical issue, surely, rather than stupidity.

They don't KNOW he is dead. If he's alive and they find him, they can confront him straight away by saying "PUT YOUR HAND IN THE AIR, NOW".

It's not beyond the realms of possibility of the guy being still alive.
I can just imagine the outrage here if he did offend again about why wasn't more done etc etc..

Apparently a Doctor accused of killing his wife is saying that this guy is the real killer, I don't think they belive him, but they may want to find this one armed man just in case.

    edit: beaten to it

Since it happened at sea, they are sure he doesn't have a fire arm

When the arm was washed up , it was pointing the finger at the garda who found it

If they do find him, they might have a little trouble getting the handcuffs on him.

Seems like a silly thread tbh, the Gardai believe him to be dead, they don't know, so until they have that confirmed they must proceed with due process... ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Meh the Gardai are just covering themselves on the off chance that he turns up alive somewhere.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 914 ✭✭✭tommyboy2222

    They meant no 'arm.

Although he could be a lot more dangerous if it was his **** arm that got washed up.

Well, the only thing they know for sure is that his arm is dead, until the rest of him turns up, they can't be sure.

No need for the warrant now that he's been disarmed.

I'm not sure what you mean OP. Does losing an arm exempt him from following his bail conditions? Is it only losing an arm or would losing a pinky exempt him too?
