    Notching not switching!

I've 2 bulls on the go in different groups of cows. I want to identify potential daughters of good cows as replacements.

I'm thinking of drilling a hole or cutting a semi circle out of tags, before tagging the calf, so that for example a notch on the left side of a tag is a good heifer or by a particular bull, and a notch on the bottom means the animal is going for beef or by a different bull.

Is it legal to notch tags this way? Anyone know?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Would you not just write the number down?

Tag them twice, in one ear, the second tag (a jumbo tag) being coded for your own information.

Thanks John I write them down, but I just want to be able to tell at a glance what bull they are by and whether to beef them or breed from them. I used to write ai codes on jumbo tags when milking cows, found it handy, esp when ai ing the heifer, but the marker faded over time.

I save my sheep info as a draft message on my phone. Can look it up quickly, but it's not at a glance.
