With the install disc inserted, reboot and try holding the option key as it starts up. See if the boot loader screen comes up.

    Just use your backup! :P

Anyway, if you have access to another computer with a firewire port that can read Mac formatted drives, use Target Disk Mode to turn your iMac into a giant external HDD.

It's saved my arse a few times.

I'm afraid I don't is there no way I can transfer ny files to an external hard drive using disk utility ?

Yeah, that would probably work. You could clone the HDD to an external drive, or perhaps if it'll let you mount a disk image on an external drive, that instead. Disk Utility won't let you access files directly though.

You should never install a developer build on your main partition, especially if you don't have a backup.

Anyway you should be able to do an archive and install using the 10.5 disc.

    +1- Basic stuff

Did Apple send you Lion Developer to try out ?

OP may I get a loan of your 10.5 disc? Seems I accidently moved some of the main icons and lost them. Only recently bought it and there was no disc with it.

Main icons? You mean on the Dock? Look in the Applications folder.

Made a complete mess of the whole thing, being new to the whole thing, I just want to restart and try again or pass it along to someone who is more used to using them. Probably put it up on ebay after this experience but was still playing around with it and made this error! Would like to have right for whomever wins it.
