Hi its been a few years since I travelled with Bus Eireann but back then my college ID was enough to get me a student ticket, but on their website now it only lists the ISIC card as acceptable student ID. Will I have to get this or will my college ID or student travel card be ok?

I don't know what bit of the Bus Éireann website you were looking at but this page says that a regular student card or Student Travelcard is fine.
Bus Éireann accepts the following Student IDs:
    - International Student Identity Card
    - Translink Student Identity Card
    - City/National Student Travelcard issued by Bus Átha Cliath or Iarnród Éireann.
    - Student ID Cards issued by a recognised third-level college in the Republic of Ireland

Thanks for that, I just went to straight to the page for purchasing tickets where it simply states:
"Students must hold a valid ISIC (International Student Identity Card) In order to avail of discounted student fares."

That is odd. I really wouldn't worry though, I wouldn't imagine it's intentional. If it was that would be a ludicrous requirement.

It's not. A Student Travelcard is the required form of Identity for Irish Rail and Dublin Bus.

Student Travel Card is currently accepted as the only proof of student status on Irish Rail, Dart and Dublin Bus. The ISIC card is accepted as proof of student status on Bus Eireann, they also accept STC and any other recognised form of third level student ID. The gas thing about STC is that the only decent benefit they have is the travel discount and the only reason they have this is that they pay Irish Rail for it! Typical celtic tiger... a monopoly creates another monopoly!

I've often thought Bus Éireann's acceptance of any Student ID is rather curious when their sister companies were more specific - not that I ever complained - I only ever used BÉ regularly as a student so it saved me buying the Student Travel Card. I wonder is there any particular reason BÉ are more laxed about the issue.

Bus Eireann (in addition to LUAS) fall outside the Student Travel Card deal, so they dont get any money from STC. With the exception of Irish Rail the other participants with STC are all Dublin based. Due to their local, regional and national operations they thought it more equitable to accept a number of approved forms of studenrt identification.

With the imminent arrival of the National Transport Authorities Smart Card it will be interesting to see what direction the whole ID requirement debate will take. One would have thought that any 'approved' student identifier (i.e. ID card) could become the platform/vehicle to carry whatever oncard chips are required to gain access to the system.
