I think independent and youth travel is more popularly known as "Backpacking" right? So why not change the name, make it a bit more simple. And it kind of implies that I'm a youth if I want to travel independently... which I'm not.

Backpackers stay in hostels, wear dreadlocks, smoke weed, hang out in unsavoury places like Bondi Junction and spend very little while living off a shoe string.

I'm a young person who travels but would never describe myself as a backpacker, I stay in hotels, and travel with my trusty Samsonite case!

I considered myself a backpacker. I dont have dreadlocks, dont smoke weed, stayed away from Bondi and spent money on what I thought was worth it. I wasn't "young" when I did it either. I was 30.

I now travel and stay in hotels, villas, hostels, guesthouses, cave's, tents, camper van's... the list goes on.

Maybe just the Youth part should be dropped?

So you think by coming to this forum you'll get advice on the 5-star side of travelling?

Anyway you've obviously never been backpacking before; also, backpacking doesn't mean smoking weed with dreadlocked people on a Thai beach, but unfortunately this forum seems to be mainly focused on that part of the world.

Ya Stinicker you clearly dont know what backpacking is or maybe you do and you’re from the USA as that’s the only place that seems to think like that! Most backpackers one meets are just "normal" people!

How also yes maybe just drop the Youth Part and even add in "& backpacking" as well!

I'm not a backpacker. I travel by car, bike, business trips too.... the point is that I travel independantly - without the aid of a tour company. I think that's the point of this forum. Would say Independant Travel & Backpacking, maybe.

    That's also a suitable title.

What the hell is "Youth Travel" anyways? Going to Disneyland with your mammy?

By the way I think that Stinicker is a troll, or at least attempting to troll.

Say's the fella with such an inflamatory nick, I'm not trying to troll, backpackers to me can have quite negative connotations especially in Australia, I tried backpacking there last year and found it quite an unpleasant experience, quite alot of which was down to the presence of my fellow country people. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt?

This spring I was in Thailand and invariably brushed shoulders with many backpackers, all of whom were grand normal people. So I apologise for offending any one, and thinking back to my more positive experiences I now support the name change.

The sweeping generalization about backpackers there was a bit nuts!! Very rarely saw that stereotype in South America.

We had enough trouble dropping the 'Student' tag. We go again and change it again if you wish. Go to the sticky at the top of the forum on the 'Future of Travel'. There's a link to a thread there that is discussing possible changes.

How is my nick inflamatory? Unless you're part of the two thousand year old cult of Christianity, there shouldn't be a problem. You know very well what the priests of this country have done to it's children.

That's because most people in Ireland who want to experience "backpacking" choose Australia or South East Asia, which is where most of the white European folks go anyways. Once they arrive in Australia, they think they're going to be the only cool travellers there, only to be surrounded by 65 culchies in Offaly jerseys. Then blaggarding follows.

Anyways I'm sure you've travelled to all the other countries of the world so I better stop discussing the art of travel, lest I embarrass myself. Like, I'm sure you've met some seriously annoying Irish people in Burundi.

]This spring I was in Thailand and invariably brushed shoulders with many backpackers, all of whom were grand normal people. So I apologise for offending any one, and thinking back to my more positive experiences I now support the name change.

Grand. And just so you know, Thailand is no longer a backpacker destination. The dirtiest scumbag Damo & Anto cunts from my town have just left for Australia, with a short trip to Thailand planned... There is no way I'm ever going to those countries if a bunch of Supermac scumbag cnuts can make their way over there and have fun...

Unless I'm a worn out 98 year old cnut who wants some fresh wet action, I'll be staying away from Thailand and it's other brothers from another mother.

That pretty much describes me too. My backpacking days are probably behind me. +1 for Independent Travel & Backpacking

yeah good idea- the word 'backpacking' should be put in there somewhere.
Ithink it is a fair way to describe young and young-ish people who like to travel cheaply.
Describing backpackers as dreadlocked crusties or gaa-jersey wearing alcoholics is a bit stereotypical at this stage (although plenty of them fit the bill).
Independent and Youth Travel has a sort of stern ring to it and sounds like a school tour you might do in Soviet Russia.
this forum would probably see a lot more activity too if backpacking was in the title

The name is grand imo, independant AND youth travel, ie two different types are covered.
