Home-dying over highlighted hair?

I have naturally dark brown hair, which I have been dying slightly darker/lighter/redder etc for the last few years at home (just when I fancy a change - haven't started to get any greys yet!)

However I got a dark base colour with copper highlights done a couple of months back, in the hairdressers. And then a couple of weeks ago I went back for more highlights. I said I didn't really mind what I got done, so the hairdresser suggested more copper highlights, with a few very blonde highlights. So I went with that.

I don't really like it though, but can't afford to go back to the hairdressers. The copper highlights are starting to fade a little already, so I was thinking of just dying over it all with dark brown dye, somewhat similar to my natural colour (Loreal Excell 10 is the one I usually use.)

However I've never dyed over highlights before. Is it likely to work out OK or will it be disastrous? Should I wait another few weeks and get it done professionally when I can afford it?

It should be fine to dye over highlights, but the colour is likely to fade quite quickly and the highlights will begin to show through again.

Be really careful dying over the blonde - Faith mentioned that they will fade - they will, but you could also have them turn a different colour. I did that, aged about 17 and i ended up with brown with a greenish tinge where the blonde was. Now it was one of the cheaper home dyes I used so that may have been the reason for the colour drama, but I don't know for sure. If there are any hairdressers on here, they might be able to tell you which would be the better home dyes to go for. Good luck!

I think it would be ok to dye it, as long as the highlights aren't too bright.

from a professional point of view... you need to add the missing tone to your hair before trying to change from blonde to brown otherwise the result will not be good. this is why hair is precoloured before a drastic colourchange in salon. i would reccomended visiting a salon for this!

Blonde takes out the natural red in your hair thats why you need to replace it with a red colour first make sure you use 3% peroxide double the amount to the colour measurement. get a sally's card off someone. a coulour is around 9 quid and the peroxide around 3 quid. get the red semi and a brown shade. so that would be about 22 quid altogether better than spending a hundred in a hair salon. and the instructions come with the colour what to do. its not rocket science
