    Hi all,

I am not even an AIB customer, but I received a text message from 00447797990997 saying,

"Your access to AIB Internet Banking has been suspended because your AIB Code Card has expired. Please go to http://www.aibupdates.com to update your account."

This site is identical to AIB's own site and asks for full 6 digits to the pin for online banking and other sensitive information.

So DO NOT even visit this site as it's a total scam!

I just wanted to inform you before anybody gets caught out by this.

I'd email AIB and the various radio shows so that no-one gets caught out.

You'd hope the time it takes to fill in a hundred of those codes would make someone stop and think about what they're doing.

    Looks like they know
    AIB wrote:
    Text Message Alert
AIB is aware that a number of fraudulent text messages are being circulated purporting to be from AIB. Examples of the text messages include: 'your access to AIB Internet Banking has been suspended because your AIB Code Card has expired'.

The text message contains a link which will bring you to a fraudulent website and request you to enter your Registration Number, Full Personal Access Code (PAC) and 100 codes from your Code Card.

These text messages are NOT from AIB. They are a fraudulent attempt to obtain your banking details.

DO NOT follow the instructions in the message and delete the message straight away.

I'm a software engineer so I'd be quite wary of those scams but believe it or not there are people out there who don't know a lot about computers and could fall for it. The site looks identical to AIB's own site so it's a bit more believable than winning the spanish/nigerian lotto.

Not everyone knows how to dig a domain name or do a whois check

Easy enough to fall for it (well, if you're an AIB customer).....if people didn't fall for it then the scummers wouldn't try it.

Not "seriously old" considering the spoof domain was only just registered.

Is there a way of reporting the mobile number too ?
Or can you spoof mobile numbers in the same way you can e-mail addresses ?

    Accepted :) just kidding

They have a new domain every few months. This scam has been going on for over a year now.

No harm in a refresher for people anyway. But AIB are drilling it into people that they will never email or text you looking for your information.

Better someone as least is informing others.
There is always someone that needs to be informed and/or reminded.

I'm impressed with the website, it's almost a duplicate of AIB, I can see this fooling a few people to be honest, better get the word out quick

It depends when it gets you too. I almost fell for the DHL one because I was in a rush and waiting for a package from DHL.

Same here - and thats what they are hoping for.

For every 100 they send out, they know for sure they will get lucky with at least a few.

sure who is! no problem! :)

I reported it to meteor already. you forward the message to 50002.
there are different numbers for vodafone and 02 and you need to ring 3 to let them know!

as for the number spoofing, i think you can do it. I wrote a java program in college before that used texts and you could put in pretty much whatever you wanted as the sender!

yeah its worth letting people know about the newer ones though! unfortunately not everyone will hear about and/or listen to the scam

yeah it would be easy enough to fall for it! i did even visit it straight away. I knew it was fake when "aibupdates" wasn't high up at all in the google rankings.

I mean to end up on the site in first place ;)
once there yes its easy to be scammed [if you dont know about domains ect], but the point I was making was to take the txt message as official in the first place

Well say you were just on the phone to AIB about a problem with your account and later that day or the next you get a text message from them. They only need one or two people to fall for it out of hundreds for it to work. If it hit's you at the right time it may work.

We should all put a load of fake numbers into the text box and wreck their heads haha! Imagine them getting hit with hundreds of 8 digit numbers, all fake and having to try to sort out which ones were people genuinbely scammed and which ones were bogus, lol play the scumbags at their own game!

I just got a text earlier from +447797990997

“Your access to AIB Internet Banking has been suspended because your AIB
Code Card has expired. Please go to http://www.aib-codecard.org to update your account.”

    I have alerted alert@aib.ie

They seem to have taken down the other website. Hopefully they will take this one down pronto also.
