Saorview et all

As a non-technical guy looking to buy a new TV I am very confused with all the MPxx and HD stuff and wonder if anyone can help me in simple terms to understand a few questions I have?

I see that digital TV is now available (I live in Moate, Co Westmeath and the Saorview coverage map shows I have an available site on air). I have a satellite dish and the free Sky box channels, but cannot pick up any RTE channels through the limited indoor aerial I also have.

So I guess my first priority will be a suitable terrestrial aerial. Would it then make sense to go for a TV set with a Saorview approval? And how will this affect (if at all) the UK channels I get through the Sky box?

Also – what’s the difference between “HD ready” and “full HD” sets? Will they both be suitable for the digital reception?

What about a “Freeview HD digital tuner” on a “TV is digital compatible in the Republic of Ireland” (Argos term)? Is it worth having?

Finally – any specific recommendations for sets users might have in the 28" to 32" range?

    Thanks in advance

It will not affect them at all, if you are using a sky box (or any other type box) the signal is processed in the box and the TV is just being used as a monitor.

For your purposes (if you need or want a new TV), you would ideally get a SaorView certified TV. This will mean you can get the Irish channels without having to add another box.

HD Ready (google 720i) is a lower resolution to Full HD (google 1080i). Some argue that for smaller screens less than 37" or so there is little benefit to Full HD unless you sit very close or are using a computer hooked up to the TV. I think both will display all of you channels ok. However if I was buying a 32" screen or larger I'd go for Full HD.

There are some nice LG and Samsung TVs in the 26"-32" range that I think are SaorView certified and good value.

Depending on your current TV, it might be worth buying a set top box that will convert your existng TV. If you have a LCD TV, then a STB will be well worth it. If I were buying a new TV, I would only buy a 'Full HD' set, and I would also make sure it received all of the Irish services - look for MPEG4 HD, and MHEG5 middleware. Ask to see RTE2 nad the press Text. You should still see the RTE picture in the right hand corner. Then look for RTE News Now as this is only available on Saorview.

Woody, Amazon now deliver certain TV's to your door in Ireland, via An Post.

The LG LD450 is Full HD with MPEG4/MHEG5 for receiving Saorview and RTE digital Aertel.

It's picture quality is excellent and LG build quality is highly regarded.

This model seems to be going out of stock regularily so be quick if interested.

There is a thread in the Bargain Alerts forum specific to this model and many boardsies have snapped it up and been well impressed (me included :))

    Yes I have it.

It's amazing for the price, Saorview and the MHEG5 interactive services are fully functional on it, have a read of the bargain alerts thread.

It's a pan-european model and thus has MPEG4 tuner for compatibility with continental broadcast standards.
