HELP! Advice badly needed please :(

So I've posted here before re my situation. My lower teeth are crooked and I really want to get them straightened, my top teeth are in great condition. However both orthos I went to see suggested putting a brace on top and bottom. I just know I would be extremely self conscious with braces as I generally am in general to be honest with fairly low self esteem. I wanted just to get a lower brace and spoke with my ortho since about this, he said it could be done no problem but an extraction would be necessary. Now I'm torn am I a fool to lose a perfectly healthy tooth (or will it be 2) just for the sake of avoiding wearing a top brace? I can't afford Invisalign or the special hidden braces worn inside the teeth so traditional braces are my only option. Advice please?

I am no orthodontist but the good guys that I know still stand by the old reliable train-track style.

    My wife wanted two upper incisors tweaked and her lower straightened prior to our wedding. She was not keen on the idea of the train-track type but a good orthodontist I know was quite frank with her saying that you can fart around with;

invisalign but they are ultimately not as controllable for final adjustments which can delay treatment

6 month braces- don't get me started- the interproximal contacts are often filed down for this, risks root damage and is not as stable...

ceramic braces- turn yellow and look crap

lingual braces (behind teeth) impossible to clean- your mouth will smell like a monkey's armpit

She went for the traditional metal braces, treatment time was exactly as predicted 9 months, no brackets fell off, it didn't reek of ass and final results look great. She now has a permanent retainer (wire bonded to the inside of her upper and lower front teeth).

Get the proper job with an orthodontist with or without extractions- you wont regret it- don't half ass it.... Adults really see beyond the metalwork these days- no one cares and you'll be happier with the final result which you will be looking at for many many years and will forget the year or two with the appliances...

    Good luck:D

Got the 6 month smile on my top teeth only and it was the best thing ever!

I feel so happy and confident and love smiling now to get my photo taken! I was like a vampire before hand.

Most places will do a payment plan.

Also I had no extractions they just filed some teeth slightly for room. They are off now a year and i have no complaints.

    My confidence has improved.

You wont even feel the time go by and no one even cares whats on your teeth.

Just keep the braces clean and you wont regret having them.

    Good luck. :D

Hi, I went up to Newry 2 months ago as my teeth are crooked and overcrowded. I originally went for a consultation for the inman aligner for my top teeth only as it would cost less but the dentist told me my case was just a bit too severe for the inman aligner as my canines are almost fully rotated around lol?

He said that I'm much more suitable for six month smiles and that my case would take around 9 months rather than 6 but that doesn't bother me. It's £1850 for one arch and £2200 for both top and bottom plus free whitening if you get both arches done! I can't wait to get them on!

JM91 thats a lot for limited objective orthodontics, with travel expenses thats ridiculous. Dont assume its a bargain just cause your told so in a northern accent, loads of places in the south are cheaper than that. Also sound like its not a proper orthodontist (6 month smiles and inman tend to be used more by non orthodontists) but a general dentist

I've done my research and honestly haven't found one place close to me that is any cheaper. I have nothing against southern clinics but I'm not going to spend more money than I have to. I know it is not a proper orthodontist.

Your post had absolute nothing to do with the OPs question. 5 minutes on google would have saved you several hundred euro and paid for Irish jobs. Are you by any chance assuming a bargain by comparing a specialist orthodontist in the south for a proper full course of orthodontics with that of a general dentists with less training doing less treatments, for less times and achieving an inferior result in the North?

JM91 don't mind Fitzgeme, I was quoted €60000 for a new BMW in Dublin but did my reasearch and got a cracking Toyota up north for €20000. Can you beleive the bargain- a third of the price- but a turd of a car...!!!!

I would almost always advise people to get a second opinion if they have any doubts about any procedures they opt to have done. It does no harm and you may find a better price to boot.

I had my dental work done in the north and the results were excellent. Chances are if you are given a recommendation by a general dentist, you will be directed to a specialist orthodontist. If you are going without recommendation from a general dentist, I would strongly advise that you check the qualifications of the orthodontist before undetaking any procedures.

If you know it is "not a proper orthodontist" why would you not want to go to someone who is properly trained and registered?

It wont cost much (if anything) in the difference and I feel you will get a better outcome
