Hi all, advice much appreciated here.

I have a family member who is elderly (but fit as a fiddle) and is an amazing singer - we have been at hiim for years to do something about his talent, but to no avail. He has sang at many weddings/parties etc over the years and has always brought the house down, so it's not just me who thinks he's fab. I've been at a few parties where people thought it was michael buble/frank sinatra singing, until they turned around and saw him:D

Anyway, he's finally ready to try to 'get out there' so to speak and has asked me to help him out. Originally, I was thinking we should try karokes etc, but there don't seem to be many of them these days. I have some ideas that I've pitched at him (alot of the stuff he sings would be loved by the older generation) but I'm not quite sure where to start - should we get business cards for him etc etc?

He's not trying to make money persay out of this, as he's doing ok financially...he just wants to sing to an audience....any ideas or where I would start with this????

That's a tricky one! I've been googling there but have not come back wtih anything concrete...

I would start by trying to some Community Elder groups, such as Friends of the Elderly, Age Action etc. See if they know of any Arts projects for Seniors.

Next I would ask Music Therapy Ireland, who would work with Elders in music.

I realise both of these sound a bit therapeutic / dreary but these groups could haev contacts to elder drama/arts/music groups where your relative might fit straight in.

Finally you could try some talent shows? Lots of places are putting them on now 'Louth's Got Talent etc.'

There's also no reason why he couldn't put on a concert - especially if, as you say, he always goes down well. Find someone who can accompany him and go from there. Video some songs he sings and put up on YouTube too.

Well Dublin pubs everywhere are doing karaoke I'd imagine that would be the best place for him to start seems as he's not doing it for the money and they'll have any song he wants.

I have googled karoke in dublin pubs, and can't come up with anything!!! Perhaps I'll just drive around and look for Ads in pubs? I like the idea of Age Action - he wouldn't find it dreary at all to be honest and would love women his age drooling over him ;)- one of my ideas is that he sings at the odd old folks home as he knows songs (and has the music!) my own mother would have sung many, many moons ago!!

My biggest idea for him is that he sings a song or two at your average 50th/60th party, 30th wedding anniversary etc. And having seen the singers who 'pretend to be waiters' during a party, and then they start singing opera (and they charge a small fortune!!!) I thought he could be an 'oul drunk' who gatecrashed and grabbed the mike or something...just an idea, amongst others!!! It would bring tears to your eyes if you heard him sing My Way...;)

try the 'forever young' chorus in finglas - it's a choir for over 65s & they're always looking for new men: www.facebook.com/pages/The-Forever-Young-Chorus-Finglas/133763226696607
