The new ISPCC May ad

Hey all, not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum, but I need an opinion besides my own and my husbands. I'm 25 and a mother of one 16 month old and I suppose that makes me liable to accusations that my maternal emotions are getting the best of me regarding the new ad for the ISPCC. I'd rather not post the link but for the purposes of this thread obviously there is a need for reference, however I urge you to take care while watching as the video depicts a faceless man abusing a child:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdHb6I0kSiM&feature=player_embedded

My opinion is the ISPCC went way over the top with this one. I've been surfing the web for well over 10 years now and I've seem quite a lot of sh!t and have come to think that there isn't anything I haven't seen online. I've never in my life been affected in the way this video has affected me. I admit, I cried for about a good five minutes after watching it. My husband watched it with me and remained silent but after discussing it with him he agreed with me, this went too far. We both believe that this ad gets the message across, sure, of course it does, but there are certainly other ways of getting this message across I think with a bit more tact.

Now I'd imagine that this ad would only be shown a night time, but I can't imagine a child not seeing this. The child in the ad shows such composure while he's getting the crap kicked out of him, it makes me worry that another child that watches this will think, he's ok, so will I be.

What does everyone else think? Am I just overreacting? Probably a little, but my husband and I can't be the only ones that think the ISPCC has taken this too far.

Just to mention, I frequent the website reddit.com quite a bit and that's how I managed to stumble upon this ad.

Lots of people feel the way you do and it is not the first time the ISPCC have issued gauche and misleading adverts.

Here is a thread from Xmas time

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056130796

It is not just men who abuse and this is what is depicted usually and seems to be here but women do too.

Child abuse is always wrong and I agree with you that this advert does not work for lots of reasons even though creatively it is an excellent advert.

Did you know that 25% of the Irish adult population are funtionally illiterate (can't pick up a pack of aspirin and read the instructions) and this might be the only depiction of child abuse being wrong that they see & the subtle use of the "man" off camera may be lost on them.

Thanks for posting - I came across the thread by accident and maybe you should consider asking the mods to move it to another forum.
