Hi all. I recently downloaded the Marvel app for my ipod and am trying to decide what I should start with.
The choice is pretty overwhelming, spanning series form the 60’s up to this year – would anyone have any advice on what series/story arcs would be good to start with? What would be considered the classics?
I appreciate this is a pretty general question – but any suggestions appreciated.

Hi black francis, do you have any favourite characters? It's probably easier to pin down good starting points for particular characters.

If you can't pick what characters to start with, you could look for the Point One issues - they were a series of standalone introduction issues that Marvel did for several ongoing series earlier this year.

OK, I'll have a look for those point one issues.

In term of characters I’m not really sure – I presume that Batman, Superman and Spiderman would be the main three but they seems to encompass so many different story arcs I’m wondering would I be better starting with something a bit more self-contained.

I suppose the first thing I should mention is that Batman and Superman are both characters owned by DC comics. There have been some comics where DC characters and Marvel characters "crossed over" and met one another, but it's unlikely they'll be available in the Marvel App.

The most famous/prominent Marvel characters are Spider-Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Wolverine. The most famous teams are the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four. Marvel push a reasonably cohesive "shared universe" model, so characters can have a solo comic title as well as being part of one or more teams - this means that if you're eg a Wolverine fan there are probably several different comics titles you can read which all have the character in them.

Another thing to bear in mind is that there are several "alternate universes" you might also want to explore. The Ultimate Universe is probably a good starting point for you, since part of its goal was to remove the years of backstory and continuity that "normal" Marvel comics have accummulated. Have a look here to find out a bit more about it. If you want to read about the "main" or "real" Marvel universe, it's usually referred to as Universe-616.

Also, Marvel have some information about the Point One books here.

    Well, that's embarrassing - I can see I've a lot to learn.

Cool – thanks for the advice. Those point ones look like the place to start - might try the amazing spider man one and maybe something from the Ultimate Universe series like the 'The Ultimates'.
