What do you believe are the perfect tools for all types of hunting in Ireland.

Baring in mind that this is Ireland and the average shooter can't afford the dozens of guns they might like and wouldn't be able to get them all licensed even if they could.

So here is my ideal firearm battery...

    .22lr Bunny's and vermin.
    .223 Fox Rifle
    .308 Deer Rifle

12g O/U Upland game and occasional clays.
    12g Pump Waterfowling & Vermin

Any additions or changes? What would you choose?
Does this cover everything an Irish shooter could want?

Also keeping it to five unrestricted guns means no monitered alarm needed.

    Opinions folks???

    for the rifles
defiantly a .22rimfire for rabbits with a mod.
I'd go for a 22-250 for foxes and could be used for deer in a pinch, have a .223 for a couple of months now after changing form a swift and it just doesnt cut it for me. Ended up just buying a 22-250 the other evening.
For a dedicated deer rifle its hard to look over a .270win.
but saying all that you could use a .243 or 25-06 for a fox and deer rifle with no problems at all.

A .17hmr rimfire is a great all rounder! I use it for foxes and rabbits, suits me grand for both and has never let me down!

you realise you've started an other .223 v .204 debate dont you :D

Could do all Irish hunting with the following, comfortably

A shotgun, any 12 bore that suits you.
    A .22 rimfire (or a .17 if that's your poison)
A deer/fox rifle (Something like a .25-06. If we could handload, I'd have a 6.5x55 here. 140gr bullets at about 2850 fps for a nice, mild deer load, 120 gr ballistic tips at about 2920-2950 fps for foxing.)

If you want to do some shooting abroad, I'd add a 7mm or .300 magnum, maybe a .375 or a 9.3x62, and, if you want to tackle the biggest of the big, a .450 NE, as its build on a smaller, sleeker frame than the bigger cartridges, while retaining all the utility.

I'd pick a semi auto over a pump, not a fan of pumps

    Semi auto 12ga
    .22lr
    .243

    12G O/U Sporting
    .22lr

    .270

I currently have a .22magnum instead of the .223... But those would be my choices!

I'm going to assume reloading becomes legal this year

    12g O/U
    12g pump
thats pretty much all rough/game shooting covered for me

    and
    .22lr for rabbits
    7mm-08 for fox and deer
    .243AI for target shooting

thats my wishlist anyway i reckon in this life ill be lucky enough to get 3/5
    the .22lr
    12g O/U

i thought it was three unrestricted

No, with three its just a safe with no alarm, four and you need to have the room alarmed and with five you need a monitored alarm

    this is getting interesting now,
    i have four;
    .22lr with mod cz
    .243 steyr
    6.5 x 55 with mod steyr
    semi auto shot gun beretta

i have to get rid of .243 not getting any use at all.
All good intentions of improving by getting higher spec scopes and stocks or just up grading but when its not broken no need to fix it. No bother to date with selection,

for new 5 guns id go for,
22lr thumb hole stock stainless with mod cz
    o/u beretta timber
223 fox Remington mag x20 scope vermint barrel + mod
    6.5 x 55 steyr pro hunter stainless x 10 scope + mod
    Semi auto beretta synthetic camo

    the 5 i have are

bakil s/s 12g light game gun
fabam semi auto 12g game - vermin
remington .22 rimfire for small vermin
cz .22-250 for foxes and deer
    cz .270 for deer

i do alot of shooting and i have everything covered. i use the fabam for most of my game shooting except for grouse and woodcock. the one i could do without is the .270 i only took it stalking 3 times last year. a .22-250 is by far the best allrounder. fast flat and hard hitting = deadly

  • Registered Users Posts: 220 ✭✭Hondata92

I could list all sorts of caibers but at the end of the day every shooter in this country needs a .22lr or .17hmr (.17 isnt my cup of tae)

Aswell as a 12 bore and for deer a 6.5x55 or 7mm and a .204 for foxs:P (dont knock it till you try it;))

In the States I used a 22LR for light work, and a 308 for everything else, and just varied the loads from 110-125 grain varmint bullets to 155+ grain hunting rounds for deer on a suppressed/moderated Remington LTR or my BR rifle.
