    Hi guys,
As per title can ye recommend a good cleaning kit for the HMR. I've tried a no name brand but the rod attachments won't go down the barrel.

    LeftH.

Is is a buffalo river one? I bought one last week with the EXACT same problem.

I have boresnakes for all the rifles, but they don't give a 'real' clean.

I had another look, STILCRIN is stamped on the handle. Clear plastic case & 3 piece red rods.

Ditto!! I could not find as much as one set to suit, so I am now using a bore snake aswell! They are a great job on my 12guage, but not as good on the rifle!

I can't believe a RFD sold you a Rod that would not take cleaning attachments

    i use a boresnake too on my 12g, 20g, .22lr & .17HMR
€10 off ebay delivered last time i got some.

A .17HMR bullet is actually smaller (.172) than a .177 (.17HMR bullets will drop right through a .177 air gun barrel) I was given a .177 cleaning kit for nothing and I burst the rod trying to push it through.

You will need a proper HMR Rod/Kit, I was given both 177 and .22 kits and neither fitted properly.
I also use a Boresnake for my HMR and find it brilliant but like to use the rods every now and again for a good clean.

Its reckoned that HMR's fire better with a lightly foulded barrel so running the boresnake through it just to make sure there is no debris etc is a good choice.

What solvents and/or oils do you guys recommend for a rimfire?

**Duffy has the kit above listed as .17Remington/.17HMR **

I had a hoppes kit like that for years until I could afford a few one piece rods

I bought the kit listed on Duffys before and its horrible!
The solvent and oil I used but the 3 piece rod is rubbish
and you would need a bore guide as the joins between each
piece of the rods are pretty crude.
I also tried single rods but they were all a little large for the bore.

I use a bore snake with oil for quick cleans when
    I've not fired a lot.

but when I'm doing a proper clean the smallest
flexible cable on an Otis cleaning kit is lovely to use
with patches, you just have to be careful when using .22 patches as if you put them on wrong on the brass slot they will be too tight for the bore.

The Brass brush attachment on that particular kit I think
if I can recall (I only tried it once a few years ago) was too tight/big to pass through the .17hmr bore without using considerable force so I binned it it may have been designed with a .17air-rifle in mind and not the HMR)

The Round patches that come with it for the 22 are a little too big, the regular square .22 patches work ok for the .17hmr

The bits from the kit can be bought separately, bought mine from ebay a few years back.

From reading different posts on different webpages it annoys be that some people treat their .17hmr rifles like a .22 rimfire. with attitudes like Ah sure ya never have to clean a rimfire! it will fire better after its been lapped with a bit of lead! etc etc, I compulsively need to use copper/plastic/powder solvents when I clean until the barrel is squeaky clean before I'm happy, groupings tend to be about 10mm at 50m on non windy days so have not got a clue if thats good/bad or average. Rifle seems to fire better after a few rounds are through it so dont know if thats me just getting settled or if its to do with barrel warming or getting a bit of dirt/powder in it making it fire better, would not like to speculate without cold hard facts.

    FTR
The reason I mentioned the Kit on Duffy's is it is cheap

I only use Parker Hale rods personally

Dev bought a Nifty Rod recently that has a bore guide as part of the rod.

I'm not sure will it take .17 sized brushes though.

A Bore snake is OK, but after a while they spread more dirt than they gather

Didn't buy it from an RFD Tack, it was in the back of my mind that it might not fit but it wasn't expensive and i allowed i'd try it. No problem to hand it back or exchange for a boresnake.
Have a Hoppes kit for the .22 and the O/U and they work fine but for the small bore of a .17 i'd prefer a one piece rod but they're as rare as hens teeth. I'll probably go the boresnake route but i'd like to give it a good clean every few hundred rounds too.

    E-mail this crowd

One piece not common as .17 is not that common
.22lr rod will do all .22 cal rifles for example and even .243 6mm etc

Are the cables coated in anything to stop scratching the bore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,729 ✭✭✭lefthooker

You can't really see it in the pic but there's a clear plastic coating on the flexi cables.

Something like this would be ideal for cleaning everything in your safe;http://cgi.ebay.ie/Otis-Tactical-Cleaning-System-Rifles-Shotguns-/400102830841?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Hunting_ShootingSports_ET&hash=item5d27fcb2f9#
There's alot more stuff available on eBay in the UK now, when I was looking last week there was nothing.

November 2009 I gave my Flexible friend back to the bank.

Since then all my purchases have been with cash. (and as a result I cut my cloth to my measure)

I bought the leatherman mut at christmas and it has been the most Useful item I own used on a daily basis, I know that it works all the OTIS rods so I was thinking ahead when buying.

    Dear Santa......
