    hey lads,

so engineering, new building looks good, course looks good . . . but anyone doing it ... Id love a brief insight into the course. heard the hours are longs, compared to other courses. heard the maths, was hard, but not impossible. yeah you need a c3, I'm walking on a B atm. this work experience thing? are you actually guaranteed work aboard, or even here (with pay)?

on the other hand, say if you dont like the course or fail or something ... can you take the year out and repeat next year or can you switch to a different engineering course which you have down on your cao.

    cheers,

I'm not doing it but I just finished first year undenominated and its a very similar first year.Yes hours are very long, possibly longest of any course.Maths is quite difficult but exams are easy enough. They really just focus on theory in lectures so its complicated but not so hard in practice.
No you can't change course in second year with out having to repeat first year and pay the fees for the years tuition in full. That's why I would recommend undenominated as you'll get a flavour of every engineering course offered in NUIG and still have the option to enter any discipline in 2nd year.As far as I've been told work placement is quaranteed. If not with a company the college will have you working for them.I suppose it all depends on the availability of jobs in your dscipline.Hope this helps a little bit.

Yeah im doing it just finishing first year, its a very hard course although its doable if ya put the head down, im not sure about what the job situation for mechanical engineers but i know for eletronic and computer engineers there are **** loads of jobs (just got a summer job working with a company that hires **** loads of engineers from nuig, they also told us the firs day of college that as soon as we get our degree we will be basically guaranteed a job unlike students doing other courses) even tho its long hours and hard work its well worth it

yeah shame about the long hours, and not to mention the 9:15 starts. but it seems it's defo worth it, especially in the current climate, anyway thanks a million lads. info appreciated

I did the Biomedical Engineering course in NUIG, its very much similar to mechanical, and we have most of the same modules!

Don't go into mechanical engineering unless you're fully sure its what you want to do!!

The only reason I stayed in the course is because I didn't want to drop out and have wasted years with nothing to show for it!

The projects are difficult! First and second year are grand, and do require a good bit of work but 3rd year is when the **** hits the fan!

Engineering is a great degree to have and if you can get through it you'll be fine! just make sure its what you want!

As for the placement after 3rd year, some people do get very good placement with great pay!

Oh and if 9:15 starts worry you...you're not gonna like the placement :p

Lemme know if you have any questions and I'll try answer for ya
