03 laguna losing power and revving

    Hi Guys,
MY crappy 03 laguna (yes it has a broken window) regularly loses power lately, this is accompanied by the electrical coil light coming on on the dashboard. I can barely reach 30mph with severely reduced power, and there is a repetitive revving from the engine also. Sometimes it goes straight away, other times it takes much longer to go back to normal. Just today the engine management light came on too, is this related to the coils?air filter maybe?Whats the cheapest way of sorting this as Im about to sell the bloody thing...cheers:)
    Steve

Buddy had the same prob with his. His turned out to be a dodgy coil which is apparently very common in that model. If you rip the coils 1 by 1 you should be able to figure out which one it is. Also with his he had the emissions filter light flashing on now and again and ended up being the cat giving trouble, still to be fixed last time I talk to him

If it's a 1.6 Laguna I'd put money on it being the coil. Not an expensive fix as parts can be gotten from breakers.

A new coil is about €25. Why bother taking the risk on a 2nd hand one?

None if your even the tiniest bit practical. It's a very easy thing to do, each one is held in by a screw and they sit nice and accessable on top of the engine.

Sounds like a dodgy throttle body to me. The revving issue is a give away.

A friend of mine had an 02 1.6 Laguna and had it replaced twice I think.

    I'd second the throttle body.

I'm not sure how accessible it is on a laguna but it should be fairly handy to remove, clean it out with sone carb-cleaner and see if that sorts it out.

Where abouts on the engine are the coils and could you talk me thru the process if possible?? Had a look but not sure where they are, have rang local garage and they have priced me 110 for replacing one coil...30 for hooking up to diagnostic comp (as eng man light is on), 30 for labour, 40 for part, + vat....is this reasonable or a rip off????Cheers again.

Possibly air flow meter, I've come across motors hunting when the AFM is kiboshed and power would be a major problem too..

Just one more question, given the fact that the car drives ok at times and the power reduction and revving happens sporadically does this mean it can be a blown coil?? If a coil blew would the power reduction and revving occur all the time until it was fixed??

Update: Just managed to disconnect the connectors for each coil while the engine was running and each time the engine changed to very noisy and jumpy-does this mean all my coils are working and the prob is something else???

Yes.It more than likely the throttle body as mentioned already.

Thanks ongarite that's my next suspect alright, is it much of a job to clean etc?? It seems to involve removing the air filter first i think...any idea of replacement cost at all??Thanks again.

Replacing it would cost you a good bit. Cleaning it out would cost you a fiver and some time!

Based on the fact that it happens sporadically and not constant. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the throttle body.
