I am looking at cars at the moment.

I have had my eyes on a lot of 1to 1.2l cars lately.

However an opportunity has come up where I can buy a 1.4l car at a good price from a friend whom is immigrating. - Is there a significant increase in the cost of running a 1.4l car when compared to a 1l or 1.2l car...?

(The car is 5/6 years old.)

    Would appreciate any advice...

(I would be driving about 100KM per week -
how much would you think a 1l would cost versus the 1.4 i am interested in...?)

Completely depends on the car and the usage.

What are the cars in question? 1 litre will obviously cost a bit less to tax and insure than a 1.4 but at 100km per week I can't see you spending any more than €15 on petrol in either!! At that sort of mileage I wouldn't let fuel consumption even be an issue, pick the car that you like and get it!!

You might even save money on fuel depending on the type of driving you do. I know my 2.0 clio is more efficient than my flatmates 1.2 punto. He has to floor it everywhere to get any grunt where I just puttle along.

I am sorry but that's Nonsense, unless you mate is driving around in 1st gear at 6k RPM!

Believe it, he drives (badly and) flat out every day and goes through way more petrol than me, especially on the long motorway drives.

I get 40+mpg out of the clio.

    That's a disgrace dude :P
I've only ever knocked 40mpg out of diesels.

I know, it's a mk2 ph2 182 as well, I have been driving it like a granny recently. After having an m3 doing less than 25mpg, I'm making the most of the extra mpg for a while!

You think if he had your 2.0l Clio he would drive any different?

He would be flat out all the time as well and a 2.0l Clio will go through alot of fuel flat out.

Your Clio is hardly a torquey monster that you dont even have to press the accelerator, like a twin turbo 3.0l diesel or something that justs pulls from nothing, your Clio has to be worked too to get some performance decent performance, all sub 2.5l na petrol's have to be worked a bit to get going.

1.2 punto is not that slow, you dont have to floor it all time, his driving style is ****, not the car, a 1.2 punto is grand.

@ OP depends on the car.

My old 1.3 lancer drank petrol, **** engine imo, my mate has a 1.4 focus that is also heavy on fuel, its thirsty and slow.

While my mam used to have a 1.0l Yaris, that was great on fuel, could do 45mpg+ with mixed driving no bother, 160e a year to tax and never a problem in 3 years, excellent car and was fast enough for her, she found it very nippy compared to the 1.2 polo she had before that.

true, my m3 is, but for a small hatch it's decent and can keep up with most driving normally. My flatmate floors it everywhere because the car is pathetic. It is by far the worst 1.2 I've ever driven. I know, I'm in it every day going to work.

    As above
The Fiat 1.2 8v is as quick as any of the competitor's offerings, and quicker than the VAG 3 cylinder sh!tty unit. The 16v is quicker than many 1.4's, like Ford's and VW's for a start. So I don't know what 1.2's you were in that were "by far" better. Maybe they were the 1.2's that you were in before you had the M3. Perspective can play tricks.

At 100km / week the difference would be fairly negligible, under around 5000km / year.
