    Help please.

Got an iPhone 4 as an upgrade and changed over to the smart phone tariff. My phone makes and receives calls no problem.

Any ideas on how I go on-line with it?

    Thanks.

What carrier are you with? You may need to enter APN settings in Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network

With your first iPhone, you should go on to the apple support site and learn about the phone's capabilities properly.
Thread in the stickies here with settings.....

This Vodafone page should outline everything you need.

The APN is basically the carriers servers that the iPhone needs to connect out through to get to the internet.
