Classic Army AUG A1 Upgrades

This summer I'd like to try out a project of some sort, so I volunteered my CA Steyr AUG A1 to be upgraded internally and externally. I've been searching for different parts from online stores, correct if me if I'm wrong, but the range is not exactly great (although I knew that from the beginning) but I'd like to see what else is out there.
I'll start with the externals: The AUG A1 comes with no rails at all for laser sights or flashlights to be mounted (stating the obvious:rolleyes:) From what I've seen online I've only seen the Phantom kits which I'm not too keen on.
So put it simply, what else is out there? Below is what area51comando (thanks for the image) did for a picatinny rail. It's a rail from the fore grip of a G36c. Although a great position for mounting, I'm not fond of drilling two holes in the side of my AEG.

Another quick question does anyone know a place which sells a CQB length outer barrel? I always liked the look and would work well in places such as the Office Block.

    Now to the internals...
I have very little...no experience in opening up the gearbox of any AEG. I know the ins and outs of how it work and the different parts and all that. I'd like to have more accuracy and trigger response, raising the rate of fire isn't a must, but allowances can be made...
I'd like to find out which parts are better suited to my preferences.

    Thanks in advance,
    D.B.

There are barrel clamps available for lasers and flashlights that would fit the AUG, and would look authentic on an A1.

Be careful about going near the internals, I had one a few years back that stripped it's piston, I had a mate who's handy with these things sort it and it took a fair bit of work to get it back in shape!

As for the externals, the only suggestion I could make it is to keep it simple and see can you source an A2 upper that'll allow you to change the optic.

    Either way have fun!!

If you can get one, a VFC/GB-Tech AUG m203 mount. It's authentic looking, and also has provision for rail mounts on either side of mount adapter.

Its a version 3 gearbox... getting it out involves a pair of screws.... Its one of the loveliest guns to work on... ever.

I've not worked on this particular gun before but up until a month or 2 ago I was the same as you - No experience whatsoever of taking one of these things apart (although admitedly I'm handy with cars and motorbikes).
Don't let that put you off. There are any number of video tutorials on you tube, video jug, etc. etc. that will guide you through disassembly of your AEG. The main thing is to have patience. If it's a project gun, I assume you've got something else to skirmish with so your in no rush to get it finished. If you hit a point where you get stuck, take your time, look at how the pieces are put together and try to logically work out how things come apart.
With the gear box... The only major thing to bear in mind is that the spring will be under tension so be careful opening the gearbox case or KABLAMMO! there are tiny gears and springs flying everywhere. Once you get the case off it's a good idea to take a couple of pics of the way the gearbox is put together, believe me these will prove invaluable when your re-assembling.

There are a lot of people adopt the 'never open your gun' philosophy, but the best way of understanding something is to see it's workings up close. Most of these guns were put together on a production line most likely by underpaid for the most part unskilled workers so they're not the most complex pieces of mechanics. It helps if you think of it like a mechano set for adults, take a methodical approach, one piece at a time. Don't force anything and you'll be fine.

Yes the gearbox falls out easily. But as Tudenham mentioned the gearbox itself was an absolute lemon. Would of been easier to throw a brand new one in! :)

It can happen sometimes. Not a brand thing, everyone gets one. My point was, the v3 box design, even the CA one, is a nice gearbox to work with.

@Lemming - I do like the authentic look of an M203 mount below. I have thought of getting one, but I could never remember the guys who made them.

@Firekitten - From the tutorials I've seen, it looks so simple. Overall it is very easy to disassemble it all. Only once it had to be opened up to change the hop up (too high powered battery, caused it to break somehow and it baffles me still :o) , that only involves sliding out the upper receiver. Simples.

@Rooky1 & darkslider - I was considering a new gearbox but the one I have now it alright for the moment. Not as powerful as I'd like it to be. One reason for the intended upgrades.
And when opening I'll take a photo, knowing me, I will forget...

@Mando Commando - Do you know where to get the barrel clamps?
