I'm sure u've already seen it, but the appendices on the LOTR DVDs are fantastic.

Star Wars Ep 1 making of is really great as well. Probably more entertaining than the movie itself. Of course u could just watch Red Letter Media's review :p

I enjoyed The Shining's making of aswell. Very interesting to see what it was like filming, Shelly Duvall comes across as a complaining ol' wagon :p

have a read thru this thread and this is a good list too. I haven't seen the King Kong making of but it's supposed to be really fantastic. Peter Jackson remakes a deleted/lost scene from the original using techniques available in the 30s.

Hearts Of Darkness,A Film maker's Apocalypse
Almost as good as the original film.

There's also Lost in La Mancha, chronicling Terry Gilliam's failed attempt to make a Don Quixote film - disaster after natural disaster befalls, and it really gets the process of making a modern film on screen. The documentary is surely more compelling than the film would have been :pac:

Plus, the LotR extended editions are as in-depth as you'll ever get!

I heard she found working with Kubrick absolutely hellish, though. She had to take a break from filming because of ill-health brought on by her nerves - and her hair started falling out! (I'm writing an article on The Shining atm.)

OP, mightn't be exactly what you're looking for, but the director's commentary on Pan's Labyrinth is superb. Not just faffing around like some directors do, Del Toro really gives you an insight into the workings of the film, how scenes relate to one another, etc. It's like a free film lecture with the DVD.

i agree on the episode I one, think it's called "the beginning" and is about 1 hour long - one of the best making ofs ever IMO, and much better than the film itself.

best bit is in the screening room at the end when all of them, incl Lucas himself, knows how bad it really is

Kubrick was deliberately much harder on Duvall than anyone else in the cast because of the kind of performance he wanted from her. But yeah, that Shining documentary is one of the best. Fascinating to see Kubrick working. I wish there was more.

Vivian Kubrick shot over 18 hours of behind-the-scenes footage on Full Metal Jacket as well, but it was never edited together. I'd love to see it made into a documentary. She did a commentary for The Shining documentary on the DVD so maybe one day she'll go back to it. Here's a few excerpts that were shown in Channel 4's Kubrick documentary a few years ago. It features Kubrick ranting about how many tea breaks the crew were taking.

Empire of Dreams, the making of the original Star Wars trilogy, is pretty comprehensive.
Mark Hammil is really funny on it as well, especially talking about being the only human on the set of the Dagobah scenes in Empire, and picking up Radio 1 on his ear piece for hearing Yoda talking :pac:

Also the making of The Abyss, a hellish shoot nearly gave Ed Harris a nervous breakdown and James Camerons insane work ethic, its one of the best making ofs ever, its actually worth owning the dvd for no matter what you think of the movie

One of the best making of features I've ever seen came in the Star Wars Revenge of the Sith DVD. "Within a minute" It was basically an hour long documentary on how a sixty second scene is made including every aspect of production from acting, accounts, costumes etc... all the way to the final cut. It was simply brilliant.

The scene in question is below.

    26 shots
    1185 frames
    910 artists
    70441 man hours

Fully agree with the Shining - very interesting.

There's some really good features on the Aliens box set too, particularly on Aliens3.

Aliens is quite interesting too, there was a big culture clash between Cameron and the British crew.
On Blade Runner there was a similar culture clash between Ridley Scott and the American Crew. You can tell that Harrison Ford hated making that film from the documentary.
In general I think it’s the films that have the most troubled production history that have the most interesting behind the scenes features.

The documentary on the 12 Monkeys DVD is brilliant. Gilliam made it so he'd have something to back him up should he get screwed over by the studio.

The Hamster Factor - relating to his attention to detail in which the scene wasn't perfect until the hamster in a cage (barely noticeable on screen) ran in it's wheel.
