good question actually, I don't think I'd watch if it wasn't in some way entertaining, but nothing beats the thrill of a goal or a win.

Basically it comes down to this:
    Win 38 league games 1-0
    Lose 38 league games 3-4

    Id rather win the 38

No, I love football. I just prefer winning than losing. And by that token, winning is better than being entertained.

Id love it to be entertainment centered but it is and always has been result based, and will only ever work that way.

I think the question is flawed tbh. We're all there to be entertained. We don't go for no reason. So regardless I'm entertained be it a 4-3 or a 1-0.

Why would you be more entertained if you lost?

What if you get hammered by Bohs 7-0, you entertained then?

I wouldn't. That's why I think it's a results business. The manager is appointed to win trophies not play great football. Fans want to see the club win and the owner wants success also

Are we talking purely from the viewpoint of a supporter if a particular team or just in general?

Because obviously as a supporter you're going to be most concerned with the results of your team, but as a neutral you're going to want to be entertained or else you wouldn't bother watching any matches not involving the team you support.

the club you go and see, support, watch on the tele, own or manage. Not a neutral

The vast majority of games I watch feature teams I have no vested interest in, so it's entertainment all the way for me.

    Results.

Going to see GUFC win ugly is 1000 times more enjoyable than seeing an "entertaining" game that we lose.

Results, Boardeaux won 12-0 this evening, and I was fairly bored by the time the 7th goal went in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 111 ✭✭davocesque

defo results. in reality both are important, but a winning team, boring or not will always attract fans. however an entertaining team, will not always attract big crowds if theyre losing, ie. Wigan!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

top flight football is about entertainment for me. its about watching guys do things you can't see anywhere but the top level. its about watching the best in the business go toe to toe in a bid to outwit each other both tactically and in terms of footballing ability

if it wasnt about entertainment then local pub sides would get crowds of thousands every sunday morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭ColmDawson

As a neutral, I watch for the entertainment. For non-neutrals, surely it must be about both entertainment and results?

I often feel I'm probably missing out on some extra highs (and lows) by not supporting any one team, but I'd hate to be in a situation where my enjoyment of good football might be soured by the fact that the team playing it were trouncing my team.

I don't think we have been that good entertainment wise, certainly in the second half of the season.

This is a big bag of ****e.If you are a true fan ,you will love your team no matter win or lose. And yeah I have often been entertained with my team losing.Sure I watch loads of games with teams I dont follow and Im entertained.
This thread is an insult to us true soccer fans .If all you want is results then just check the results and dont bother to watch any game.STOP ****ING MOANING if you dont like it and piss off and go the cinema.

Trust me, i watch nearly every Arsenal game mate and we haven't been that entertaining. Entertaining football for me is creating chances and having shots and playing with expression. Not just pass...pass...pass...pass.

Anybody who thinks that watching football and supporting a team is only about results is delusional. The whole reason you are taking part in the activity in the first place is to provide yourself with entertainment.

I'm Liverpool fan, so if I'm watching a game Liverpool are not involved in 99% of the time I'm watching it to be entertained. When Liverpool are playing I'm supporting them as a fan so I want them to win but I also want to be entertained.

Voted results as that's what matter at the end of the day.

That said, the concept entertainment is wide: it doesn't have to be good football and can be close games; needle matches and many other things.

I think teams with really stellar resources like your Manchester United and Madrids/Barcelonas do have a duty to try and play football but teams with far less resources than them shouldn't care a whit "coming out and playing" against teams better than them.

Anybody that says that entertainment is as important to them for their team as results is mad. I'd rather my team won 1-0 with dog-rough football than draw 3-3 in a thriller. You have to question whether people are supporters of a team (as opposed to Sky types who just love football generally) if they think otherwise.

See how far Barcelona supporters wittering about beauty lasts if they started losing games on regular basis.

I dont understand? You are not entertained by football? Why do you watch it then? How does a team of 11 men getting a result mean something to you unless if you arent entertained? Why dont you go to an office and watch a team of guys hit their quarterly targets?

    haha.
I never said I dont find it entertaining, I'd just rather a win( which to me is entertaining in itself) than a high scoring lose( 4-3) or something like that

Okay then, why do you think you watch football and follow some team every week? Does it support you financially? Or provide you with food? Or help your family in some way? Is it a necessity that you could not survive without? Or is it a luxury?

To see them win, to follow them with passion, to wear their jersey and sing my heart out in the stand and to watch them win.
