A large proportion of central government tax revenue is derived from value added tax (VAT), excise duties and other taxes on consumption. Would this form of tax be more abundant than say PAYE tax & how do the two compare on contributions to the government's resources?

There you go - latest figures for April.

You can the 2010 (whole year) figure and the 2011 (whole year) projection in the same table.
